Purchased this recently. For some reason I’d never been a big fan of gold tops but I’d decided that P90s were sweet spot pickups for me and started lusting after of these. It’s a Gibson Murphy Lab ‘56 Les Paul, lightly aged.
It’s funny how tastes change over time but as a kid I would always find the skinniest necks possible. This is a chunky neck profile and it’s lovely. It’s not quite a baseball bat but it’s certainly something to get a hold of. I liken it to a great quality acoustic neck. The quality is stunning but it’s the tone that sold it to me. The P90s sit pleasantly somewhere between Strat single coils - primarily the neck pickup - and PAFs. These have a glorious nasally bark to them when pushed, especially through something ‘tweedy’. But when you roll back the volume they can almost sound like a Tele. I was after a 50s blues sound and this thing delivers perfectly.
That's lovely Chubbyross. Similar to you I didn't care for Gold when was younger, but once I turned 50 it seemed an appropriate birthday present. Mine is only a basic '60s tribute' version (guy I bought it off was getting a more upmarket version a bit like yours). I love the P90s, would prefer a fatter neck (yes my tastes have changed too), but not enough to sell it and buy a different one, especially at the prices now. It’s funny how tastes change over time but as a kid I would always find the skinniest necks possible. Ross. Lovely guitar. I was at the Gibson Garage yesterday with my eye on exactly this model. But I got distracted by the range of new Mesas, which are pricey. Congratulations.
You do seem to be on a buying binge...
I haven't been to the Gibson Garage yet. I really should go but it could be costly! You do seem to be on a buying binge...
My buying binge has replaced my love of cars. Sadly, the traffic, aggressive driving and 20mph limits everywhere in London has pretty much done for my half century of car and driving interests.
At least guitars are relatively cheap and hold their value quite well.
After my latest purchase I vowed that would be it. However, I know full well that won't last long! Over the years I've bought and sold so many Strats. I've never found my holy grail one so I'll keep looking for a keeper.
I'm beginning to get arthritis in my index finger :/ so contemplating thinning out the collection. Most of it is decent quality Fender & Gibson but I was offered 10k yesterday for a 60 refin strat by a guitar shop & I reckon there's another 5 or 6 in that if I sold privately, so every cloud.

I'm also starting to suffer. It got to the point last summer where I could still play but it was painful (not chopping a leg off pain but pretty uncomfortable). I bought a daddario finger exercise thing and worked on slow scale exercises while changing my (piss poor) technique a bit and it is now a lot better. I certainly don't have the dexterity I had when I was younger but I can play everything I want to play. For clarity I'm in a band that typically plays a 40 song indie/pop/rock set at weddings, parties, festivals etc.I’ve got Dupuytren’s Contracture, and it is starting to affect my playing now, not so much my chord playing, but definitely my lead stuff. It’s not so much the fingers are curling, but I have lost a lot of the reach. I cannot stretch between frets like I used to. There will come a time where I won’t be able to fret chords though, and there’s no guarantee that surgery will restore dexterity as well as straightening the affected fingers.
Not looking forward to watching my hands curl up, to be honest.

There's probably a couple of k in that... depends what it's been refin'd to... I would look at speaking to gardiner houlgate auctioneers, as I posted in the other thread. Chubbyross said:

Well worth a visit, but I actually found it difficult to bond with anything as there was too much choice, literally 30 Murphys on a conveyer. Plenty of lovely acoustics too. Highlight for me was a prototype Iommi owned SG, and the opportunity to try the new Mesas and the pedal range they have brought out.
I agree with the comments about shifting spend to guitars, given the 90+ minutes it took me to do Southwark - Dalston - Piccadilly!
