Musically, I think that Johnny Cash absolutely murdered Roberta Flack's beautiful "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", but somehow , in spite of his tuneless grumble, he managed to pull it off and produce something even more stirring...so it shouldn't really be on this thread.
Except that Roberta Flack's was not the original, by a long way.

I nominate You're The One That I Want by Hylda Baker and Arthur Mullard.

Florence + The Machine doing ‘You Got The Love’

The Candi Staton original is an absolutely classic vocal which is sung with soul, subtlety and feeling - Florence just goes ahead and shouts all over it.
Ah, she wasn't the original though really, it was lifted from elsewhere.

Nor was Frankie Knuckles, who first popularised it. It was Jamie Principle, who was too young to get into clubs when he first wrote it. It would have been the first House record, but for the fact that the very first iteration was on tape.

A great deal of well known versions are not "the original", performed by the writer or someone they specifically wrote for.

All Along The Watch Tower being a well known example.

Half of the output in the 1970's can be called Bee Gees covers, given the number of songs they wrote for other people. Going by Wiki, at one stage in 1978, 9 out of the top 100 Billboard hits were written by the Bee Gees & their songs have been recorded by 2,500 artists.

Zombie, the Adam feat Amy version.

Quite how a visceral anti war song becomes knocking one out in a car wash is beyond me.

Tin Tin Out need to face charges for crimes against music for trashing The Sunday's Here's Where the Story Ends, and what is worse is that they had a hit with it so loads of people think it is the original.
