Gig plans - 2024
Discussion
been a quiet few weeks after losing my dog and cancelling a few bits.
got back into a bit this weekend with Air at Royal Albert Hall celebrating the 25th anniversary of Moon Safari. Iconic chilled/afters/poolside album for the rave generation; which for fans was very good; for the uninitiated (girlfriend, who insisted she wanted to come along) quite a challenge
then back to Ronnie Scott's for Jose James, an American soul/jazz/hip hop artist who was excellent and managed to introduce another friend to Ronnie Scott's and she loved it there.

As there is no 2025 thread yet I will have to add this here.

My partner really wanted to go, I didn't. I didn't pay much attention as I have never managed to buy tickets legitimately for years, so I assumed they would be sold out in 5 minutes and she would give up.
No, she only bloody managed to get some on release day.

Gone from not having much on this year to quite a few. heaps of bands bring more shows along this year.
Got Billy Talent this month, then Alkaline Trio, the Ghost cinema concert thing, Sepultura booked for November & just seen soulfly doing a small show in glasgow, too. May have to go that...

Gary Numan last night in Bournemouth...came away disappointed to be honest. Seen him many many times over the last 25 years or so and he's usually brilliant but I came away thinking that's my last one.
The set should have been great (especially the Pleasure Principle element, not so keen on Replicas) but I honestly think he puts in a lot more effort when playing the newer stuff and just interspersing it with "classics". Vocals sounded pretty poor for him too, may have been the mix.
Lights are great though as are his band and the Pleasure Principle synth parts are still after all these years utterly sublime but didn't do it for me.
Maybe I've just been spoilt with some great gigs recently (Orbital, Leftfield and Warrington Runcorn New Town Development Plan) or maybe the atmosphere wasn't usual Numan..don't know.
Saw him on Friday in Brum, thought it was brilliant, took my son and wasn’t sure what he’d make of it but he loved it too. Enjoyed it more than the last time I saw him 45 years ago though I was a bit worried his hair might fall off.The set should have been great (especially the Pleasure Principle element, not so keen on Replicas) but I honestly think he puts in a lot more effort when playing the newer stuff and just interspersing it with "classics". Blancmange last night in Southampton, had the bonus of them supporting themselves as their off shoot band The Remainder.
They were as brilliant live as ever (seen them many times since they reformed), they don't live off former glories and keep moving forward musically. Neil Arthur for me is one of the best front people live out there and the current line up are probably the best I've seen him with too.
Really needed this after the very duff Numan gig last week, reinforced my thoughts on that gig.

Big weekend coming up thanks to one of the bands rescheduling from earlier in the year, so Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer on Friday, 30 Seconds to Mars on Sunday. Really looking forward to SP, been a huge fan of their for ages, 30 Seconds I'm a little more apprehensive about.
Always thought they had great songs, but Leto's voice could never do them justice. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Not related to the songs or his voice but I was reading some comments regarding the O2 London gig in the week. Sounded like a mess, the front section in front of the stage was half empty after charging £96 a ticket, the band asked the security to let people from the back half of standing section in who paid only £60 ticket to fill it up. Top half of the O2 was closed off also which was also surprising to hear.Always thought they had great songs, but Leto's voice could never do them justice. Happy to be proven wrong though.
There were comments saying if you had attended the Nottingham gig, you were told by the band if you kept hold of your ticket you could gain free access to the London night. If you had a Bluelight card tickets via the app were also being given out for free. Someone on Trivago was selling tickets for £6 because they had gotten them for free via Bluelight.

I'm off to see them perform this open air at the Summer Sessions series of gigs at the Guildhall Square in Southampton. I was umming & ahhing as it's open air & we all know what British summers are like, but then I found I could get the ticket half price via the Live Nation Concert Week promotion so booked it! Nice work but the promoters pee'd me off a bit doing this as I'd already got a ticket, did feel a bit "niche" for the Summer Sessions in Southampton so I can imagine sales were slow. That said I did get a last minute half price ticket from Ticketmaster for a recent Southampton Guildhall gig so shouldn't moan too much....at least the gig won't be empty I suppose.
Our Daughter who works in the music media industry was only saying the other day how many panicky emails and calls she gets from Promoters/Agents trying to get publicity for poor selling tours/festivals. I'll start holding off buying for stuff like this in the future I think......

I may regret not going to that one... thought it was strong money, dithered & then the Tues show (with the mighty Descendents in support) sold out. although the way that NOFX's Farewell Tour's going I expect that they may pop-up at a festival in the future. Creeper on 14th July.

I may be entering grumpy old man mode, but a) gigs are a lot more expensive and b) they seem to book much further in advance. Its harder to get excited about coughin up £100 for a gig in Autumn 2025

That's both of us and totally agree, at least I've seen just about everyone I want to (at least a few times) who is now expensive ticket wise...definitely starting to pick and choose gigs now. Its harder to get excited about coughin up £100 for a gig in Autumn 2025
Had it good for 40 odd years though plus it makes me more inclined to seek out new music. Try to put my money into those bands/labels/venues where I can.
