I love Tool, am besotted with them, saw them play the Odeon of all places and think they are as heavy as fk, but to you guys they're probably lightweight.

To be fair the venue was far too small for all that power

They're probably my favourite act in terms of musicianship. Saw them 2yrs ago at the MEN Arena.

They're not ultra heavy but they have their moments.

Horses for courses indeed. I guess if you favour a cleaner sound, you want to hear everything distinctly, whereas I just prefer the whole "feel" of doom. I just love the muddy, suffocating atmosphere of that sort of stuff. Ditto death metal and grindcore - really don't get on with This or This, but love This and This. The former are clearer, more technical and probably heavier, but there's no soul to them for me.
You see, that's all just noise to me.

Pretty much the same here, although that Behemoth track definitely has something going for it.

As far as drummers go, I don't personally think there are many who come close to this guy tbh. Very very tight performance. K J Sawka:

I like all those four. I hate being kind of a snob/bighead, but I really like the fact I can enjoy both new and old, good/bad/old/ production and suchlike - I dont like much of the ultra-clean stuff though. You wont get better than Pytten@Grieghallen. Admittedly I've never really got into any of those four bands in particular (more their main influences apart from Repulsion..) but apart from a year or two in my youth, always been into more BM than DM anyway..

I'll accept that a lot of it is probably nostalgia on my part. I'd drifted away from death metal into doomier waters by the mid-90s, so I've missed how the more modern sound has evolved. Now I'm getting back into it, I'm obviously going back to the stuff I used to like back then, which in my mind is the blueprint for that sort of music. Same with Black Metal really. I was never really one for the symphonic stuff. The more raw stuff just made a bigger impression on me, so when I look for "new" bands, I look for bands with that sort of vibe. There's also part of me that finds it weird to see death and Black Metal quite so mainstream these days. Doesn't seem to fit the music.

I have just, this morning, d/l'd a copy of Deftones - Diamond Eyes (Deluxe version).

Just cool

For me, so far, it's their best output since White Pony. Being a big The Cure/Depeche Mode fan myself it's great to see them exploring that side a little more again. Diamond Eyes is superb and a perfect demonstration of their ability to blend heavy, crisp and atmosphere into one very natural sound that really is all their own.

I know it's been posted once but what the hell:

Now that's odd 'cos it ranks well down for me. I'd probably put Deftones as my lowest ranked (I just never got into it tbh), then Around the Fur (thier most mainstream offering imo), then Saturday Night Wrist and Adrenaline about the same.

White Pony is currently my top ranked, and as yet I'm not sure where Diamond Eyes fits against it. Probably level but in a different way.

As you say though, they all offer something different. e.g. you just can't beat those jump-aroundy tracks off Adrenaline, yet then contrast with Passenger off White Pony (probably my all time favourite, not least because of Keenan's presence).

i think my fondness of around the fur in some part is due to the context of its release.i got it on the day of release as my band was doing some recording in lipa studio 1.i couldn't get over the staggeringly good, heavy(for that long ago particularly)production and the mindblowingly good songs.it was on heavy rotation for me right through the winter and still evokes those autumn/wintery feelings which happens to be my favourite time of year(i do have finnish blood in me!!)it instantly influenced the way i wrote songs, making me slow stuff down and give everything time to really develop.it made my recording sessions improve 10 fold and for the first time made me savour juicing every sound for all it was worth.

Deftones passed me by somewhat, although I'll admit to nodding along to My Own Summer.

Few tracks to properly metal it up smile

Around the Fur was and still is my favorite Deftones album. I bought a mag years ago with a cd on the cover - there was a variety of stuff on there from Pitchshifter etc and there was a copy of the My Own Summer music video - I recorded the song onto tape and played it every day while driving to my stty job working 12hr shifts at a hotel. At the time there was a band called the bluetones and when I mentioned the album to people they thought I was referring to this band and had got the name wrong. I'd always liked the Cure, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, My Bloody Valentine that I always felt needed to feel heavier / angrier.

I was at art college when I first heard Engine No. 9. and I bought Adrenaline while in Canada, I remember the price on the label was less than I paid at the till because they added the tax at the sale point. Still like that album also, but listening to both those songs takes me right back like it was yesterday.

Oh and some smashing pumpkins, some other good memories.

The County Medical Examiners

Total Carcass worship and not to be taken seriously (studio only, members under pseudonyms etc), but great fun.

Love these guys (but then anything Carcassy can only be good)

Another band in the same vein, General Surgery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9rIQZeOWEI

Another death/grind band that make me giggle, Screamin' Daemon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Eg9N9s9WMM , shame they only have the one track on Youtube. The whole album is brilliant and the lyrics are hillarious!

Anyone else into The Black Dahlia Murder? Their first album is total Carcass/At The Gates worship but is well worth a listen if you like the sort of thing, par example:

Yep, General Surgery are pretty decent. Few others I can think of are Exhumed ("Slaughtercult" is very good) and Heamorrhage, although I'm not as familiar with them.

I thought I better give the 'new' AiC album a go since it had some very good reviews and I was in the mood for something a little more easier listening. I was quite impressed, definitely some good songs on it anyway - this one probably being my favourite.

It is a great album IMHO, my favourite track is 'Looking In View': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqFlWgJloZM , one of the best videos of last year.
