If we're going down that route, then these guys deserve a mention:

Just to prove that all black metal doesn't have to be about blast-beats all the time:

Sourvein own, and T-Roy is an absolutely top bloke. When we supported them, he turned up to souncheck at 1pm already out of his tree and was still drinking with us at 2am.

Even better was that this gig also featured Ramesses as headliners!

again, really heavy sound to me.a real weight to the sound and roll and groove.if it was faster it would lose the weighty impact i think
See, they do zilch for me as they sound sterile. Now, 1.43 into This is just cloud9

it is perplexing what people deem "heavy".i've just listened to that electric wizard track(from ear,i think it's tuned to c by the way).it could sound heavy but i would need to fk about with the eq on everything.it sounds far too mid range biased and there is not enough bass guitar in the mix to truly give it any weight.again,i suppose it's horses for courses but i would think to qualify as heavy in my eyes there would certainly have to be a broadening of the soundscape.

Definately. Chaosphere especially is a challenging listen. I have actually played it to a guy who really likes his death metal and he could only handle it in small doses! I love the dischordance of it and as you say the time changes are all over the shop. Have you heard any Candiria perchance?

No bother mate, their best material is definately off the earlier albums, their peek was 300% Density IMHO. I like 'What Doesn't Kill You' but it vears a little too much towards soaring P.O.D style melodic stuff in places. Ken Schalke, their drummer is one of the best in the business IMHO. Proof being this vid where he plays the first half of the song on single kick then fixes the linkage in his pedals at the beginning of the breakdown! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHhY6v39NOc

As far as drummers go, I don't personally think there are many who come close to this guy tbh. Very very tight performance. K J Sawka:

It certainly is.

Not too long I bought a Dilinger Escape Plan album, and just thought WTF? I got quite into Sikth so my thinking was that something with the interesting time changes etc would be right up my street, and as a huge FNM fan I knew they'd supported Mike Patton not too long ago.

I didn't enjoy at all.

But for a Tool-lite band, Chevelle certainly have their moments. Whilst Grab Thy Hand certainly softens off in the verses it maintains a real darkness throughout:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWcT9duphCY

And then there's the brilliant Comfortable Liar. What you don't get on the Youtube vid is the big "bass bomb" smile

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk_tH7GQwo8&fea...

Oh and any excuse to post this vid by Rammstein!

I think what is 'heavy' has changed dramatically over the years, also it's pretty subjective. You mention Chevelle, to me they are sometimes heavy rock rather than metal but most of the time they are not heavy imo (say in comparison to Bolt Thrower or Entombed) but a good band regardless.

It is interesting what people deem heavy, I suggested in an earlier post variations in a style that bands play - Carcass for example - they were dark, heavy and brutal in everything from the album cover to the lyrics but the later stuff on swan song was a massive departure from the earlier sound and definitely more radio friendly.
Then there are bands like Fear Factory and Pitchshifter, they really have a massive divide between sounding heavy and, not.

Horses for courses indeed. I guess if you favour a cleaner sound, you want to hear everything distinctly, whereas I just prefer the whole "feel" of doom. I just love the muddy, suffocating atmosphere of that sort of stuff. Ditto death metal and grindcore - really don't get on with This or This, but love This and This. The former are clearer, more technical and probably heavier, but there's no soul to them for me.

Anyway, thread needs more Reverend Bizarresmile
