Don't think I'm your old drummer - I've never really played pop with any of my previous bands, I'm still trying to talk my current band into covering Ordinary World by Duran Duran lol.

Tis funny but my singer's favourite artist is Billy Joel, which is about as far from metal as you can get but it's all influences - and great music is great music.

I think the 80's was the era for great pop music - the art has been lost tbh, it's amazing how accomplished some of the 80's pop bands were as musicians and song writers - Level 42 or Talk Talk anyone??

I have a sneaking love for electro music and have spent many a night listening to Propellerheads, FSOL( bit hazy on those nights lol), Leftfield etc

I think my love of 80's music is why I love Type O Negative so much - listen to October Rust and this could be downtuned Duran Duran -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjjJUxYe0QU - dare anyone to listen to this and not be moved....
ive always thought i hated type o but that song is fking lovely!!very duran guitar patterns

Textures reminded me of Karnivool (great band, check out the song 'Themata' for heaviness with great vocals).

I am reliably formed by one of the guitarists that this guy is quite probably the Carlsberg of string-twangers -

The firs video floors me completely - he's truly incredible...

(and that should hopefully keep Tuscaneer happy too, lol wink )
yeah,i've got themata...very good album indeed.seen that broderick guy before.he's learned a lot of styles!!very, very technical player.i'm surprised dave mustaine's ego allowed him to bring in a player who outshines him in the flair department!!

townsend is a bit of an enigma to me.i can't get into his(admittedly very wide spread)of music.i find humour in music a big turn off and is one of the reasons i can't listen to a lot of zappa's juvenile content

Zappa certainly divides opinion! Some of the only music I listen to that makes me laugh out loud but I can totally understand anyone who hates it! A lot of it (certainly the post "mothers" stuff) is done with a sneering irony that takes the edge off a bit. Still, I can totally understand why some people just don't like it. There's a lot of crap to wade through but some of the music is amazing. Joes Garage being a particular favourite.
that's what drives me nuts!! that late 70's/early 80's stuff like joe's garage, sheikh yerbouti and tinseltown rebellion are musically uniquely superb.but songs about having sex with hoovers and wet tee shirt nights ruins it all a bit for me!

Are you two taking the pee or you seriously don't think that's heavy? I don't like it, but you don't get much heavier than (Funeral) Doom.
honestly mate, there is nothing remotely heavy about that.frankly it's embarrasing.i suppose we are going round to the old argument about what heavy is.there is no weight in the sound at all.it sounds like it was recorded on an old tascam 8 track.the synth work is laughable and the eq is all over the place.don't get me started on the ball bag trying to sound all sinister on "vocals"

a very "down/depressing" sound? yes
"heavy"? not even close

Not a fan of that top link, the bottom one however is pretty sick, never heard them before but will definately be searching out some more songs by them.
Out of interest did you listen to any of the links i posted further up?
yeah, i know born of osiris quite well.i'm a funny fker when it comes to vocals and as such can't live with all the squeelers and screamers.i like it to be more hardcore based in its execution(if it's shouty) but do like actual melody to accentuate the lines

if you like uneven structure go back over the last 10 pages or so. pretty much everything i post in here is djent specific or at least polyrhythmically inclined. basick records host a lot of really good bands at the moment.

standouts for me at present on that label.....

circles

visions

chimp spanner.

looking further afield try periphery and haunted shores
