This really irritates me. You walk into an almost empty restaurant and ask for a table for two.

The waiter / maitre d' then takes you on a long tour past loads of empty tables until he finds another couple enjoying their own space and offers you the table right next to them.

Neither you or the other couple want to be stuck next to each other. So why do they do it ? Is it just that it's easier to serve adjacent tables than when they're further apart ?

It's to do with the waiting staff I think, makes it easier for them to look after you.

But it would be nice to have a bit of space!

The restaurant is most probably split into zones, one waiter for each zone, on a quiet night there may only be one zone open and one waiter on duty. Much easier to have everyone together rather than spread around restaurant.

This seems most plausible, in my experience they normally try to cram everyone in by the windows. I just tell them we'd rather sit "over there where it's quiet".
