I have 8 people for dinner this weekend. I want to offer some Champagne cocktails to start.

Would love to buy 3 bottles of Moet or similar, but at about thirty quid a bottle I am shying away from doing that.

Is there an alternative that would do me proud at a lower cost please? I have a decent Sainsburys near me, but not a chance to look yet.

Any thoughts would be most welcome thank you smile

Just get a prosecco if your doing cocktails. Champagne would be a waste

Thank you. Bought neighbour what looked to be a nice Taste the Difference Prosecco from Sainsbury for a tenner so that should be the ticket.

Classic champagne cocktails: get a jug, squeeze one lemon (take that as one measure for this), add one measure of sugar syrup, and two-three measures of cheap brandy (depends how pissed you want to get your guests). Pour that lot into the jug, with ice. Then add one bottle of Sainsbury's regular NV champagne. Pour the champagne slowly or the whole lot will froth like a bd.

Serve in flutes, use something to hold the ice back in the jug.

Prosecco's nice enough, but it's usually too sweet or floral for this. If you want to sub in something for champagne, try Lindauer.

Denbies 'Whitedowns'.

£15.99 from Waitrose, or £14.99 from the vineyard at Dorking.

It knocks any Champagne at that price point into a cocked hat.

really very very drinkable- works perfectly as a cocktail- although mrs puggwash and i loved it so much we bought 30 cases for the wedding, and unfortuantely they were all drunk!

What sort of ratio please? Nothing else just the two? Ladies would like this...and me I think!

I am also going to do a 'French 75' as I'm cooking a French themed meal!

Thank you for the comments re Prosecco and Champers. I plumbed for the Taste The Difference bottles from Sainsburys as they were a tenner each and just down the road. The nearest Majestic was a bit of a drive from here.

True smile

Nice cocktail from the South Tyrol. Prosecco + Elderflower Syrup + Half a lime squeezed and quartered + 2 mint leaves.
