Does steak and kidney pie smell really bad?

I can't eat it. I don't mind the taste but the smell just puts me right off.

I can eat steak pie so it must just be the kidney that smells? Does anyone know why this is?

I don't like kidney, but I can eat a steak and kidney pie if I pick out the kidney pieces. I quite like the smell and taste of kidney, but it's the texture which I hate.

Ox kidney is a strong flavour & smell & I don't use it. Use lamb's kidney instead, much nicer....just going to have some for brekkie in fact yum

think about pie-quality meat in most establishments where pies are factory-made.

then think about pie-quality offal. or rather dont.

Sticks.

I like it but know what you mean. At school we had kidney casserole, with a tomato and onlion based sauce. Really did taste disgusting.

I've never liked kidney - as a kid it was the taste and texture, but as an adult, now I understand the kidney's function within the body... yuck

Someone once said that the people should never get to see how laws or sausages are made; he was right about the sausages. Mechanically recovered meat anyone?

yes

One of a few things I simply cannot eat.

I'm told that soaking lambs kidneys in milk before cooking removes the odour. Anyone know if this is true?

It does go some way to neutralising the strong smell. It works a treat for strong liver as well. Leave to soak in milk for a good few hours in the fridge.

Sticks.

Does the milk enhance it in any other way?

This thread reminded me that when I was a kid (1960s) we had kidney soup. Yum. biggrin

... if you do it with liver which is much more porus than kidney the milk takes away the bitterness of stronger meat. I'm a big fan of liver and bacon casserole and the lambs liver (or chicken livers) are left in milk for a few hours, then dipped in flour and shallow fried in butter/oil mix.

Dont do offal.

My aunt used to use a little kidney liquidised in the gravy which was great for flavour.
