This is probably more a finance/economics issue but it would prob have been moved here anyway.

I eat a range of food brands, be it value ranges to top end stuff - it all depends on the individual product. One brand/product I usually buy is Heinz Baked Beans.

Just been down to Tesco and the current price for 1 tin is 64p. I remember just a few years ago when it was around 40p for a tin. Some searching on the next indicates they were 36p in 2003.

The next step down from Heinz Beans are Tesco own beans for 35p and Tesco Value beans for 28p.

Now as much as I like Heinz beans I don't think I can justify paying almost twice as much than the normal standard Tesco beans. Heinz tatse better IMO but only slightly.

What do you think of these rises and are there any foods you have given up due to crazy pricing?

Branston here two, also my wife has tins of spaghetti as something to take to work and quite often ends up with the kids shaped stuff depending on which was cheapest.

Tesco aren't as cheap as you think. Try Morrisons or somewhere else.

A similar thing happened with tinned tomatoes; at one time they were about 13p a tin.

Yet another one who prefers Branston here... Tescos own are pretty decent too when I fancy slobbing it - was brought up on Heinz but very rarely buy them these days!

I find a dash of Encona and/ or Worcestershire sauce cheers up even the cheapest tin as too!

Over the years I've noticed that Heinz seem to have lessened the beans to sauce ratio. I like the Branston brand too smile

There's a 'Which' bean taste test that you can read up on.

Tesco's own brand beans are very good. Tesco's Value beans are nasty yuck

Morrison's value beans, on the other hand, are what I'd choose every time.

Aldi beans are the best. Great beans, good tasty sauce, just the right consistency.

And don't just take my word for it; even Albert Roux agrees!

Thing is Branstons are 63p. Are they really almost twice as good as supermarket own brands?

Branstons here too.

I quit Heinz when they started becoming more like tomato sauce with a few beans thrown in. I actually ended up passing them through a sieve to get rid of the unwanted 10 gallons of excess sauce!

Dear Mojoo,

another vote for Branston but (oh the shame) Mrs Noise prefers Heinz weightwatchers.

My Branston vote is only made however because the original Crosse & Blackwell in their green tin days are no longer made. The recipe changed when they reappeared, less sugar and salt IIRC,

regards,
Jet
