I figured this was worth a quick thread of it's own. I know a few from here have been to The Sportsman, and it has some loyal followers (captainzep, you! thumbup)

Well, I've been looking forward to going for a long time... Over a year. I've just got back from an amazing lunch. Almost certainly the best meal I've ever had, and I've had some exceptionally good food in some really great places.

It's the most unlikely setting. Right on the coast, and from the outside it looks like a pretty shabby place, in need of a bit of paint. Don't be put off. The welcome and atmosphere as soon as you enter is superb. Every member of staff is really friendly, and Stephen Harris, the chef, was chatting cheerily before we sat down.

I won't go into detail here yet, but the tasting menu took 3 1/2 hours, and was exceptional. There were no bad courses, and more standout dishes than average on a normal tasting menu. It's such a relaxed environment, and it's such a pleasure to be able to eat food of this quality without needing a tie and dinner jacket.

The attention to detail is unreal. Phil, the chefs brother even knows the trees the wood came from to make the tables he commissioned! The food was outstanding, but the obvious care that goes into everything is so evident. Everything is local..i.e within a couple of miles, and there's stuff to try which is unusual like Widgeon! They make their own sea salt, butter, incredible breads, cured ham etc.

It's also ridiculously good value for what you get. If you're near Kent - (or even if you're not, it's worth travelling a long way for) then I urge you to try it...I think captainzep will back me up on that!
