I have stopped once at this place on route to blacpool with the kids, and would happily recomend it.

Very close to the M6, decent food and beer at decent prices. Quite familiy friendly without being "wacky warehouseish"

If you come off the M6 at J 15 or J16 and go cross country to liverpool, it's a nice drive and there's loads of good pubs on your route. Nantwich, Tarvin, Tarporley all very well served with good pubs.
The Gunnery at Tarvin is very nice. Or the Pheasant in Beeston. Or the Dysart Arms. Or Panama Hattie's if you like Mexican (or Panamanian...). the Boot and Slipper at Wettenhall.
Slightly out of your way, but a nice road, is the Combermere Arms in Combermere. Really good.
