I recently invested in an accurate digital food temperature probe and have used it for a few things (mainly beef) but maybe there's more I could do with it...

Without wanting to encourage too many smutty replies, what do you use your one for and do you think it really helps or is just a gimmick?

Perfect for beef joints to make sure they don't over cook. Also good when smoking food using a Weber kettle, where you need to maintain a steady low temperature.

meat mainly, but also sugar and deep frying.

it really needs to be one you can leave in the oven with an external readout though, if you have to keep on getting the meat out to check it then it's hardly worth the bother IMO

I use mine to check everything from ovens to food temp to fryers. I never trust a built in thermostat and always double check. I also have an infra red non-invasive probe that is very handy.

That's the type I've got now after giving up on all the rubbish oven thermometers I've had over the years.

I actually used it a couple of nights ago to stick in the middle of a lovely Dexter rib-eye steak I was cooking and I have to say it really helped get it just right as I was paranoid about over cooking it.

I'm still not sure I've got full confidence in it though. At very low temperatures in my oven (which isn't fan assisted) I often think it's under-reading, although it may just be I haven't used it enough yet.

So will I get a really accurate oven temperature reading from the remote probe if I just let it dangle in the oven between the shelves?

I've also got a laser thermometer as well and agree it can be v. useful for some things.
