My wife has just spent about 8-10 hours making this:

Buzz Lightyear by binaryimage, on Flickr

She's charged £20 for it. I think that's rather low. Any views?

She charged too little, though someone could go to local supermarket & buy a cheap buzz cake.

How big is it? There's no idea of scale from that.

£2 an hour labour, plus materials.

I hope it's not her business, and it's just a one off for a favour.

very low, but I take it that's her first?

my mum started at £40 for a sponge cake which would be a couple of hours work. wedding cakes with a couple of days sugar modelling can be several hundred.

until she's got a portfolio and experience, she'll be limited to what her friends feel is reasonable.

Unless you bought your wife from a catalogue and she sends money home to her family, she is undercharging.

It's about a foot high. It was for a friend of a friend and yes the idea was to build up a portfolio.

A couple of others:

That looks fantastic. I'd say it was worth more than £20. Having made a fair few cakes over the years, it isn't cheap to decorate them like that.

Your OH has great cake imagination! Liking the caterpillar cake, saves people mashing up the cake with clumsy knifework.

Awesome cake!

Unfortunately people don't place much value in such time-consuming and skilful handiwork.

So, I think £25 would be top end.

Am I allowed to suggest that Buzz's face looks like Freddie Mercury though? biggrin

They are fantastic, I would certainly pay more than £20 for something like that.

Thats way too cheap! My OH runs a part time baking company.. not sure if i can post a link, oh well.. http://www.boolasbakery.co.uk/

She said she would have charged about 60-80 for that. For reference, a full time bakery would charge even more. It can be a nice little earner if you are talented. Half the work involved is netwoking and getting your name out in the local areas. Maybe she should give it a go!?

I'd agree 60-80 just on the basis of £5 an hour + materials maybe a little bit less for mates rates?

Simes.

I agree with previous comments. When you do this for friends it is difficult but they will ask you again if they are pleased with the one you have done and not overcharged. It is a pleasure to do these cakes and I am sure your wife likes the different creative challenges too.
I will find a photo or two of some I have done and post.

Seems a reasonable price for a friend.

For a business? Clearly if she's spent 8-10 hours on it it's not a viable business if she couldn't sell it to someone who wasn't a friend for significantly more than that, unless she can make many in parallel and sell them all.
