London - Proper Pubs
Discussion
As per the title really. Got half a day to spare in London next month. My London geography is most poor (The only bus I know well is the 205, round all the termini) but I know i'll be near the Natural History Museum and don't want to stray too far from there.
I'm looking at where to go for proper pubs that serve proper beer. None with Sky TV or such nonsense. Stools and such not around round tables. Spit and Sawdust is the phrase i'm looking for really!
Any help with where to go? Preferably by the NHM but can go a few tube stops away if needs be!
Cheers and all help appreciated.

I reckon this place might be right up your street:

It used to be my local back when Coys was opposite it.

The Sam smiths near trafalgar square if I remember rightly, plus a place behind Liberty's that we stumbled upon (found the pub before libertys).
It's Liberty! Do you mean The Clachan? Or there's a Sam Smith's (Red Lion) further down Kingly Street. If I'd invested the cash I put across those bars in the 4 and a bit years I worked at Liberty I could probably retire now!

If the upper middle classes (or Chelsea fans, if you get the timing wrong) make you uncomfortable, then maybe best avoided. A shame though, they do a great range of beers. Noger said:

Seriously though, the Old Ale festival (just gone) has some beers you won't find in many places at all, and outside of the festivals it is all well kept and interesting. OK, so the food is quite expensive and, a bit like the clientele, a little poncey. The beer prices are not outrageous.
I would far rather put up with a few sloanes than brave the tourist traps of the Chandos (the Sam Smith's pub near WEstminster Abbey is far better, and does a nice line in Thai hookers) or the PL.
Dismissing the White Horse is IMHO short-sighted. And it isn't THAT bad, at least not compared to my "local" during the 80s, the Admiral Cod

Saying that, Waitrose has moved into town though, so it's perhaps only a matter of time before Jack Wills arrives, and it's all over...

Depends which way you come from I guess! I like it though, is a useful place to meet up with friends heading into the west end from various directions.
Hmm, poor effort at a swerve, Liberty's front entrance opens onto the bottom end of Argyll Street. The Clachan is behind, as in by the back doors of, same.Anyway, where did you go, OP?
