Any Port Experts Here?
Discussion
I (and my 3 siblings) inherited around 400 bottles of 1970 Cockburns port - 100 bottles each.
We have drunk a few bottles over the past 10 years, but probably have 380 bottles left.
We would like to sell some bottles as we won't drink them all before they go past their best (drinking very well now) and replace with an newer vintage of potential equal measure and hopefully increase our stock levels in doing so. Ideally on a 2 for 1 basis.
The idea would be to have good supply of port for my lifetime (I'm 38) and also have plenty to pass down the line. Also we don't really want to dilute our very good stock with OK stock, but we would be willing to wait 20+ years for the port to mature.
Can any ports experts give an opinion on this? I don't want to be ungrateful, but I would appreciate informed opinions rather than guesses.

I would go and talk to one of the London Wine Merchants and explain what you want, such as Berry Bros. etc they should be in a position to purchase your excess cases and replenish your cellar but also look to auctioning it through Sothebys or one of the specialist wine auction houses and then go to the wine merchant cash in hand.do a little research and see which avenue comes up with the best figures.another option once you establish the value is to offer it to one of the clubs or universities to get a better price.
I'm selling Cockburn 1970 at £650 per case + VAT at the moment. This means buying at some 10% less. Agreed its a great drinking port but its sadly not Taylor or Graham (£1250 & £995)
I think you will be hard pushed to get 2 for 1 simply because of the price increases over the years for recent vintages.. Graham 03 is £650, Noval 07 is £460 and so on.
I would keep an amount of the Cockburn 70 for your own drinking and sell the rest to exchange for younger vintages of other producers.
Happy to advise further.
