Hi guys after a little help. Looking for some German beers for my Dad as a present, any suggestions? If they are from around the Dortmund area, then that is even better as that is where he lived in the 80's while in the army.

Usually a lager drinker, but enjoys bitters and ales too.

I won't be ordering just one brand, but probably about 15, plenty of variety is good.

Any suggestions?

I went to Hamburg during the summer and experienced:

Jever
Bitburger
Radeberger
Bock

Jever was my favourite out of those.

all ths squaddies I've ever known drink Warsteiner in Germany (aka 'Wobbly')

DAB is the main Dortmund Beer, there's a Dortmunder Export too. Hansa is the cheapo beer from dortmund

definitely get some Weizen, some Alt and Kölsch if you can as well I reckon

Really nice place.

I was there over the last weekend in June so it was lovely weather, just chilling out down by the lake was bliss, most of the houses lakeside are stunning. The centre was nice too, good shops, some lovely buildings, nice relxed atmosphere with people enjoying a drink in the various cafe's / bars dotted along the streets. The red light distract was a bit of an eye opener, one of the streets has big gates enclosing it.

Got to enjoy watching the German's beating us in the World Cupand Sebastian Vettel winning the European GP in a German bar too, to be fair they weren't too bad to us!

I was there doing some work, so didn't get to experience as much as I'd like, we did do a coach tour of the city though which was quite good fun, the guide although German had a good sense of humour.

The restaurants we ate at had been chosen before hand and I can't remember what they were called, but there were plenty of nice looking eateries around.

I'd imagine with the weather being a bit colder this time of year, it's still a nice place to visit, wrapping up warm and taking a stroll around the lake would be nice I imagine.
