Kebabs in pitta or naan.

The recent filthy takeaway pictures thread has got me thinking about kebabs and in particular what type of bread they are served with.

I live in Manchester and the majority of kebab shops here are indian and the preferred breadular vehicle for the kebab is the naan bread. However there are a minority of places which either only do kebabs in pitta bread or offer that as an option. When I've been on nihghts out away from Manchester, there are more places which seem to do kebabs in pitta bread only. So is the type of bread kebabs are served in dependant on the region or not?

Its usually a pitta bread around here in central Scotland but most places offer the naan as an option.

Most kebab shops up here are of Turkish origin and you get a pitta bread...

In the Netherlands, they don't even know what a pitta is, only shworma in a flatbread here.

the kebab van in hatfield did them in a rolled flatbread, much better than either pitta (everything falls out) or naan (too thick). i can think of 3/4 other places round edgeware road who also use flatbreads.

generally i think if its a greek/turkish cypriot outfit they go for a pitta, if its middle-eastern a flatbread.

That said I would LOVE a kebab in a Nann! But as im a girl I only ever have the salad kebab anyway so its probably wasted on me....

When all the shops were owned by Cypriots it was served in a pitta, now they all seem to have been taken over by Iraqi/Kurd/Afghans and they serve them in a naan.

Wouldn't have one nowadays though as the food hygiene dept seems to have got lost in the council house.

Personally, I prefermy kebabs on a naan. I think pitta breads lack the structural density to carry a shedload of donner meat and chicken pieces as well as salad, red onions, chilli sauce and mango chutney.

I prefer my kebab in a naan as they tend to be freshly cooked in a tandoori oven. I always avoid the donner meat though.

i prefer naan, but nowhere near me does it. best kebab in the world was the caspian in altrincham. big chunks of meat cooked in the tandoor along with the naan. sadly, it is no more and hence no more full house kebab.

Proper bubbly naan bread cooked in a tandoor oven is great. It's chewy with a slight sweetness to it. Some places without a tandoor oven just grill the naan which doesn't cut the mustard as the texture is totally different.

I'd never even considered a kebab in a naan. But thinking about it, my favourite chicken kebab from Marmaris in Bath with mint yoghurt and a couple of chillis on top, in a Peshawari naan...

if its doner or shish, I prefer it in pitta. if its Kofte, I don't mind it in either. They're both great for different purposes.
Sheekh kebab for lunch (lamb kofte) in naan bread with salad and mint sauce.
Dinner time for a kebab in pitta, with tons of salad.

My local now does doner wraps. doner with salad, your choice of condiments, in a toasted tortilla wrap. Tastes very nice! and doesn't feel as bloaty as in naan.

Usually pitta here in Glasgow but new takeaway I've been using serves all their kebabs in naan unless you ask specifically for pitta. Favourite of mine is a mixed naan kebab, naan bread with a skewer of chicken tikka, lamb tikka, donner kebab and chilli sauce
