I read an interview with him once, he builds the pictures up in layers, but it's not as 'shopped as you'd think. Each layer takes 2 or 3 people up to 2 days to build.

I have the book, not only amazing pictures but shows how they're made - available on amazon for less than a tenner and well worth it just to see how they do it... truely fascinating stuff and some pics that aren't on the site... get it!!
