Hi. I need to make a kids dinosaur cake for saturday. I was thinking of baking a round madira cake wit buttercream filling. Then I brought some of that coloured ready to roll icing and basically use the round cake as th dinosaur body and make a tail and long neck with head and join them on.
BUT how do i make a long neck stand up on the cake?

Also when i make cupcakes/fairycakes using 2oz suger, 2oz flour, 2oz butter and one egg why do my cakes not rise that much? I use self raising flour. Surely i dont need to add baking powder too?

Make it 2D - will be a lot easier.

Dinosaur cake
The best way to get the head and tail to stick will be to cut a smooth flat area where you want the head and tail(this will help adhesion). Then mix up some butter cream icing in the same colour as the outside icing to hide any joins (recipe on side of icing sugar box) and use this to glue the two bits of cake on. If you need additional support you could use some cocktail sticks. Peirce the inside of the neck and tail with a couple of sticks and push this in to the dinosaurs body.

I would say your cake recipe is just not enough for it to work properly. Here is the one I always use. I have used this recipe for as long as I can remember and it always works well.

Normal Sponge Cake recipe
6oz Self raising Flour (sifted)
6oz Caster Sugar
6oz Soft Margarine (the stork in the tub not the block works better)
3 large eggs

This makes enough to fill a 9 inch round baking tin about 2 inches high
Preheat oven to 180c
Grease and flour the inside of your baking tin

Cream your sugar and margarine together
Once a light fluffy yellow colour with no lumps add your eggs and flour gradually beating all the time
Scrape the side of the bowl and mix for another minute or so until everything is incorporated
Pour in to the greased and floured tin and put in the oven for about 20-30 mins until the top is a golden brown colour. (To check if cooked stab the cake with a clean knife or metal skewer. If it come out of the cake clean with no bits stuck to it the cake is ready.
Turn cake out of tinon to a cooling rack (you may need a knife to unstick it from the edges and hit the bottom of the tin with the knife to make sure its not stuck there either)
Leave to cool
Decorate

I think he means a lying down dinosaur cake rather than a standing up dinosaur cake.

Wooden Dowels (however you spell it), inserted into the neck and head of the dino that you've made in advance of course...

Then, when the cake is covered in the same colour icing, simply use a little of the same coloured icing mashed down with some water to make a glue, and stick the dowel at a suitable angle into the cake...

Sort of like this: http://www.jamtartscakes.com/assets/images/childre...

Not the best example but you get the idea.

My Mrs has made several of these dino cakes and they turn out very well if you get the proportions right.

Good luck

I think the flat dinosaur cake would be a lot easier....unless you do a Stegosaurus ...there's a few good ideas if you type stegosaurus cake into google.

I haven't made one myself, but this is one my sister-in-law made for her daughter. Making a lying down dinosaur saves all the problems of supporting the head. Don't know if this helps but here is a picture of her cake:

I would do a laying down one too. Bake a normal sandwich, cut it a bit over half and stand on cut edge, then cut a head from remainder and use sugarpaste for legs and tail.
