They were probably porcini mushrooms if it was in an Italian restaurant.

To contrast, the worst dish I have ever had involved a starter of mushrooms and an Italian restaurant!

Porcini can be huuuuuuge. I've encountered examples in the wild weighing 500g or more.

Did they look anything like this?

Funnily enough, I've had the pleasure of having some truly fantastic food, but one of the most memorable dishes I've ever eaten I had extremely low hopes for but has stayed with me since I ate it probably around three years ago.

It was only from a Carluccio's bistro at a shopping village, and if it's the same as on their current menu it was fresh egg pappardelle with a mix of oyster, shiitake, porcini and button mushrooms and was really outstanding.

No Way nono
just sautee till all the juices evaporate - they'll coat the mushrooms and will taste great
takes longer but soooo much better
