There's also dioralyte which is usesful at replenishing electrolytes but I've recently read up on coconut water being a good natural source of electrolytes.

I've personally found that simply dressed salads help me recover, but I may just be an oddity.

Based on extensive research I think it depends on what you've been drinking - and therefore what type of hangover you have.

De-compile the symptoms and treat each individually (or in totality if need be):

1. Headache - paracetamol
2. Feeling sick - a thumb of fresh root ginger sliced in hot water
3. Dehydration - Dioralyte
4. Low blood sugar - fat Coke + bacon sandwich
5. Brain not working - Berocca / any high dose Vitamin B supplement
6. Late one - 4 espressos

Berocca. In a pint of water. Then time, preferably asleep so you don't feel it. Aspirin is good too, and pretty much harmless.

Alcohol is alcohol, there is no real difference in effect apart from the quantity you can drink before you fall over.

Stella seems to be an exception. fk alone knows what they put in that.

Don't forget a fair portion of your hangover is vitamin deficiency including C.

Bloody Mary FTW.

Don't forget preventative maintenance - night before a pint or so of water and a couple of aspirin/ibuprofen/paracetamol

I usually double drop berroca mixed with a small amount of diet red bull, plus a couple of 500mg codeine if required. a good chunder also works wonders.

years ago i had a hospital pharmacist for an OH, who kept a stock of drugs usually given to stop vomiting or dehydration. these were a godsend.

A pub local to me used to (probably still) do a 'recovery breakfast'

1x Berrocca
1x Bloody Mary
Eggs, bacon, mushrooms etc.

A large steaming brew on top of that takes some beating and by then you've got a taste for the Marys.

Ding Ding! Rouuuund TWO.

Haven't got a fking clue, but I would love to know aswell. Seems to make me feel ok-ish for an hour or so, then spiralling back down into the depths of the hangover.

Saying that I rarely drink that much as I don't really go out that often. Last time I got a proper hangover was my birthday which culminated in about 12+ pints of Heineken. Not the worst of hangovers but stuck with me until sunday, getting progressively (sp?) better. Still 'exercised my right' with ms Nur the next day though.

My only tip on top of the advice - avoid ibuprofen. It's not clever to take this on a dodgy stomach, as it only makes it worse (ie paracetamol or aspirin is way better)

nooooo

your liver has to deal with paracetamol etc and thus puts alcohol on hold so avoid as it will prolong a hangover as well as prolong the time it takes before you can drive again!

Personally for me a beroca before I go out and one in the morning when I wake up. oh and light exercise and fruit =D

For me the symptoms of a hangover are:

1) Headache. This is dehydration. Treat with fluids.
2) Feeling sick. This is body's natural reaction to poison. Treat with water.
3) Tiredness. This is because you stayed up too late. Treat with sleep.

The key thing in avoiding "the morning after" is to take non-alcoholic fluids onboard the night before. If you chuck in the night the best treatment is to down a pint of water immediately. If you chuck again have another pint - repeat as necessary. This flushes the stomach and throat and rehydrates as required.

The worst hangovers I have ever had came because I passed out and did none of the above.

Some excellent advice here - a lot of things I can relate to working, but forget to do!... The only thing I would add (I can't explain why this works, a friend gave me the tip a few years back) is that taking a Zantac or two (the supermarket equivalents cost nothing these days) before going drinking makes the world of difference - I still get the sore head and the tiredness, but very little of that shakey feeling where it feels like someone took out your insides, microwaved them and shoved them back inside during the course of the night!

The only thing that "helps" for me is drinking a lot of water before I go to bed, this sometimes results in me projectile vomiting the water all over the floor, not a good idea as far as the mrs is concerned.

I'm 43 now and I still don't understand hangovers. Sometimes when I deserve one, I don't get one. Sometimes they come late in the day, although I got up feeling fine. Occasionally, I get one, despite having drunk in moderation the night before.

On Monday night I was out in Cowes and got into a very bad way (thanks to some silly drinking games). Next morning, people were surprised to see me bright(ish) and early at breakfast. We went out in the boat, did some practice sailing and then raced. It was only about two hours into the race that the hangover hit me while I was sitting on the side of the boat. Shortly afterwards, I had to do some intensive work, raising and lowering the spinnaker a couple of times for short legs and forgot about my hangover.

Replace 2. with a couple of glasses of tonic water (qualine?? to reduce nausia)
And that is pretty much my complete "I've got a hangover" to-do list!!

Normally go for the berocca and painkillers all in one handful, following by the bacon and washed down with the selection of drinks in the list! normaly gets me feeling sort-of normal! smile

Normally if I've had a heavy drinking session and I wake up feeling fine, I know it's going to be a particularly bad hangover later in the day as I must still be pissed! Normally evidenced by the drunked swagger to the bathroom when I've woken!

Water & sludge food before you retire.

Wake & take co-codamol/dydramol or better, along with sucking an anti-nausea pill.

Bit more sleep.

wk/sex.

Fried products and full fat Coke or Iron Bru.

If all of the above can't sort the hangover, you've obviously drunk sufficient quantities of THF. Likewise, if the above takes any more than the edge off, you weren't trying.

Oh and man up.biggrin If you haven't cried big, ugly man tears while trying to walk 5 yards to hurl all over the throne (as opposed to in it), you haven't lived. Same goes for any hangover of less than (shrug) 36 hours+. 2 day minimum hangovers have always been way better than black! Exercise on the day after is just plain wrong.

Two sachets of Dioralyte before a 'session' minimises hangovers. Only problem is it tastes vile.
