Right

I am from foreign climes, the heathen and barren lands of the north. As such I am rather uncouth soul who is slowly being brought into the 18th century while living in the West Country.

Tell me though, for this IS a weighty polemic.

On your cream tea. Is is jam on top of cream or cream on top of jam?

I am undecided.

Therefore, on one half of the scone I have jam on top. On the other I have cream.

All is well with the world.

Cream on top. That way the two stay separate the other way about you get a red and white streaky mess.

Jam on top. That way the two combine into a ripple-effect the other way round is just straight lines and boring. smile

PS. Climes.

If you are in Devon: Scone, cream, jam on top.

If you are in Cornwall: Scone, jam, cream on top.

Cream on top. Purely from a practical standpoint, it is much easier to spread the jam first then dob the cream on after.

Cream with jam on top. If the cream is straight out of the fridge it has the required solidity to prevent a ripple, and the jam can be dolloped on top lick

Oh, and scones are dead easy to make and much nicer fresh and slightly warm from the oven licklick

oh there's more...

So take exhibit A, my most recent effort after riding across to Minehead a couple of saturday's ago...

You'll notice that after loading the scones I have a miss-match of remaining materials. I liked the jam, found the clotted cream fairly heavy going. So, as you can see, at the end the jam has been pillaged but the cream is somewhat still unused.

Is this just a simple amateur mistake and I need to brush up on my construction skills or does it run deeper than this....

... what i am getting at, is would such a state of affairs be considered bad form and am infact in danger of being driven out of the country by a group of angry scrumpy drinking locals?

Answers on a seaside themed postcard please.

Some people put the cream on first and top it with the jam.
My personal favourite is jam and then cream, but that's partly to do with the way I was brought up.

Jam spread on scone, then dollop of cream on top.

How on earth would you apply jam on top of cream without the lot being shoved off the top of the scone?

Why decontaminate the gorgeous taste of fresh homemade scones with jam and cream? It's just wrong.
