Suggestions please chaps.......
I shared a good (circa £100 worth) bottle of '73 Fonsecsa the other day - or I think I did, I bought it for a mates 40th, we drank it a couple of years after the event but I was too pi55ed to remember the details!
It was bl00dy lovely & got me thinking how good a *really* good vintage might be?
So - sugestions please. Budget is up to £200 a bottle. It's to be drunk now, with some fine cheeses & after a few bottles of champers to liven us up! Both seasoned red wine drinkers (both prefer the heavier varieties) & we can both handle our booze............ Having said that the '73 Fonseca - if that is what it was - was beautifully delicate.
Or should I get 2 at £100 each & prepare for the hangover from hell & gout?

Have a look at http://www.thevintageportsite.com/declared-port-vi...
That will give you an idea of what vintages to look out for. You probably want to look for something at least 20 years old. Interestingly, 1973 wasn't a generally declared vintage...

Try and find the bottle but failing that ring up a good wine merchant Berry bros Etc and have a chat with them.if you don't know the year/house i'd buy a couple at £50,make sure they are drinking now and another at £75/100 again drinking now,use the change to buy yourself a bottle of Lebanese Red,Chateau Musar, well you did say you like heavy reds ! some of the years are 15 1/2 per cent,a great drink.can't help any more as everything i have was bought years back so an not current on prices

ou were probably drinkign a 19780 or 1975, I don't think 73 was a declared Port vintage.
My 40th is this year, and I have been dropping hints on 1970 related presents - a Jaguar E-type, Rolex submariner, an original copy of Atom Heart Monther by Pink Floyd, an original Film poster of M*A*S*H, and a case of port amongst other things.
The way things are going this year financially, I'm most likely to get a case of Stella from Asda...

We had these at Christmas:

1963 Sandemans was absolutely amazing. Looked like a honey/straw colour in the glass, but so much flavour.
The Colheita was almost as good (my Father preferred it) with a slightly drier taste and more complex nose.
In any case, both were far nicer than the £50 bottle of Graham's I bought for New Year. What a waste of money that was.

I was hoping that we would get an update to this one! Great to hear they were both good 1963 Sandemans was absolutely amazing. Looked like a honey/straw colour in the glass, but so much flavour.

They really were memorable. Perhaps we should have kept one for next year or something, but I'm glad we decided to open them. I think I'm developing a palate for tipples well beyond my means!
