No doubt this will soon be moved to TV & Film, but I'm sat watching it and I really want to try the home-made crumpets!!

Anyone made them before? The OH said "you can buy em for a quid, so why bother" but they look lovely.

I saw it and yes, they looked great. As I am not one for baking I tried to encourage my OH to have a go.

Bet she won't.

By coincidence I made some crumpets from Bill Granger's cook book.

They were a bit of a faff on to get right, but when I did, they were supertastic.

They were better when I made them a bit thicker than in the photos. They're also better cooled and then toasted - the outside crunches up nicely, and the inside is properly cooked. They can be a bit doughy if you rush them.

I can imagine. The sight of them floods my small brain with memories of having 2 of them, every single morning, toasted with a hilarious amount of chocolate spread on each one, then under the grill for about 30 seconds so it all melted into said crumpets. Sounds like a childhood fairytale I know, but I was about 20 at the time!

Must try them, reason I like pikelets, thin version of crumpets, is that crumpets are bit doughy and rubbery for me but they looked ace.

The programme is a really good idea frankly, when I look in my Mum's cookbook there are all sorts of recipes that had obviously been handed back and forth, but never any blooming instructions.

Those pakoras looked ace too.

Anyone reckon the Snake and Kidney pudding crust looked a bit generous? Just too thick? The huge ones at the dinner afterwards looked OK but the one Si and Dave did was all crust and no snake.

They certainly do. Crumpets with lashings of butter (so it leaves a little yellow round mark on the plate) cannot be beaten.

Except by pikelets with cheese slice.

Watching cookery programmes is something I occasionally do if I can be bothered. Most recipes though, you think 'ooh, that might be nice to try' but in reality you never do because it would be a complete faff.

I watched the Hairy Bikers Mum Knows Best and I am pretty sure I will try most of those recipes. Simply because they are how I was brought up to cook and bake.

Depends where you are from, where I was brought up crumpets were crumpets and pikelets are same thing but thinner, yet someone brought up 12 miles to the North the term pikelets refers to what I call crumpets and they just don't / didn't have the thinner version.

Dibble's pictured versions appear to be in the middle ground re thickness. Possibly crumplets or pikepets.

No, second thoughts I don't like the second term, pikepet sounds like a mangy dawg on a caravan site.
