I generally only drink wine with food.

When I'd finished dinner I had some red wine left, so I went and got some cheese to go with it.

When I'd finished the red wine I had some cheese left, so I went and got some more wine to go with it.

and repeat...

What is it about cheese and red wine that work so well? drunk

Unless it's stilton I cut out the middleman!

Somehow biscuits don't work so well with cheddar - not enough flavour contrast.

I'm afraid i have to indulge in the biscuits with all types of cheese. Strangely enough the only cheese i can't eat is Stilton.

It probably works in much the same way as cheese and raisins work really well together.

Cheese is good. Wine is good. How can it not work!

On the other hand - don't try Coffee and Basil.

Another combination that works for me is cheese and honey.

(cheddar works well)

That's funny, "I like an awful lot of coffee with basil" (sorry, I'll get my coat)

Actually I find cheese and fruitcake/Christmas cake also goes really well together, as does cheese and that fig jam stuff.

IMHO Red wine and many cheeses just don't go. The acidity of a Loire white goes better with Goat's cheese. Similarly with Brie/Camembert, I think white is better.

Beer with Cheddar.

But Port for Stilton of course smile

Although for me the perfect match is Sauternes and Roquefort.

Every year, my company gives the staff a gift or mini hamper. Quite a good one this year... John Lewis Cheese Cooler Basket (£45). Bottle of bordeaux (2007), red onion chutney, savoury biscuits, some soft cheese, couple of different mature cheddars and a wedge of stilton. All in a wicker basket with a built in cooler bag.

Cheese, olives, hunk of fresh bread and butter and some pickles/relish. Served with a glass of red wine. Awesome.

Another favourite at the moment seems to be a bottle of red and a big bag of Maltesers in front of the TV. It just works.
