My wife has to go to Amsterdam tomorrow for a couple of days and the hosts have threatened her with much Champagne.

Now this obviously isn't a bad thing, except that she prefers good beer. Unfortunately, said hosts have said "Don't worry, Mr Heineken will be availabl". She wants beer, not pop!

We know our British Ales but not a lot about Dutch stuff, and being "A Lady" (a touch of Little Britain there!) a bar crawl and tasting session is not really on the cards.

SO can anyone recommend some good beer she can ask for out there? She's not into the strong stuff, and doesn't like Bocks or Witt beers.

I eagerly await your collective god advice.

PS As I type this I'm sitting in The Bridge Inn, Topsham, for those that apreciate good beer and god pubs.

Hi Lee,

Mainstream is Heineken (also own Amstel brand), Grolsch and Bavaria - there's another big one that I can't remember.

Generally most dutch beer is excellent.

Unless J wants a serious hangover, it's best to avoid anything with "winter" anywhere in it's name eg Grolsch Wintervorst is 7.5%, Karthuzer Winterbier is 10%.

Also steer clear of "dubel", "tripel" or "quadrupel" in the name, it's there for a reason wink

Of course, if you really want to get hammered - Haerlemsche Winter is the kiddie - 12% from memory (very hazy one).

Apologies for any spelling mistooks, but dutch is not my strong point.

I see you've signed up for the TVR Tour of Spain again, us too!

Give my regards to J,

Simon

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the comprehensive reply! I can feel a trip to Amsterdam coming on myself, with all this talk of beer. Although maybe not the 12% stuff!

Alledgedly Jules' trip is work related, but I'm not so sure she'll be getting much of that done if she does hit the beer.

Yes we're looking forward to joining you and MAry and the rest of the returnees to Spain. I hope we are as fortunate with the weather as we were last year.

Hope you and Mary are both well?
