Googled this. I reckon the difference is using cream (italian) or milk which has been evaporated (Indian) which provides the difference in texture. I find using a milk/cream mixture with italian style icecream gives a lighter result.

Try one in a malai flavour, it's a lot more creamy and subtle but very very nice.

We have just discovered the nicest brand of kulfis, I'll find out the company name when I get the chance, although I know they are based around Leyton somewhere.

Unlikely mate, I tend to eat in Indian restaurants frequented by Indians and can't think of one place which makes their own.

Sounds great- what is malai flavour - does it refer to the aerea rather then a taste???

Thanks for investigating the company as well

The Malai flavour as far as I can make out is just plain with a little cardamam, not too sure of how it's name came about.

The company I was on about is called 'Carn's Limited' and is indeed based in Leyton, east London.

I first tried it at a restaurant in Wembley and have subsequently found it for sale in a shop in Hounslow. They are on a stick and in a pretty plain packet but are by far the nicest kulfis I have had- including ones I've eaten in India.

You may find it in Indian shops although I doubt their distribution will have gone beyond London.

Everest Ices also do decent enough kulfis and are much more widely available, but not in the same league as the above.

Place called Chennai Dosa. There are 2 branches, one non veg and one veg, next door to one another. They are right at the top of Ealing Rd on the junction with High Rd.

Mainly do South Indian stuff, and is amongst the best south Indian I've eaten in the UK. It's also dirt cheap, around £5-6 per head- so even if you didn't like it then you haven't lost much.

If you do pay them a visit then I would reccomend the chilli idli for starters along with a couple of methu vadas and onion rava special masala dosa for mains. With a kulfi to finish of course! Only thing is that it is like a cafe style experience but not surprising at that price point. Staff are polite and orders are taken accurately, which for me is the main thing.
