Tried some today - thickly sliced and lightly fried in butter - a cheesey taste but very nice. Anyone else tried them?

Mushrooms I assume? Make sure they are still fresh and hard, not old, puffy and dusty.

Puffballs are delicious (and most important of all, free thumbup) but they need to be collected 2 or 3 days after rain on a dry day. Fried in butter, they're like french toast.

However, they need to be absolutely white inside as any hint of yellowness will render them slimy and horrible when cooked. Also there is the danger of confusing them with 'earth balls' (which are brown inside and toxic).

Used to have loads near us as a kid - they tend to grow in fields where cows have been - must be the nutritious pats.

Fried with garlic and butter - mmmmmmmmm
