Does anyone know a good Japanese Restaurant in central London? I'm looking for something of average price (about £30 per person for a meal).

i'm quite fond of ikyusan [sp?] on the main street through chinatown. the sushi's great and they do fantastic value set meals.

sushi, sashimi, tempura, a soup, a main & some sides, plus fruit to finish - around £35-40 total for 2 people. food is much better than the price may suggest.

they also do thai and chinese, which is great for making up your own banquet.

Ikkyusan? Not tried that one, can't remember the name of the one we went to this year but it's just off Leicester Square on the outskirts of china town - really simple, good sushi and the Bento Boxes were very good also.

Hakkasan (SP?). Expensive, but extraordinary.

google tells me your spelling is better than mine, and also that ikkyusan is on gerard st. can't go wrong on the set menus, but i'm going ala carte [whats the japanese for that?] next time. might drop in saturday actually.

theres a couple on lisle st/little gerard st. but can't remember names to distinguish them. one was very small [2-3 tables on the grd floor] with a queue outside so thought it would be good, but ended up being highly disappointed.

Bincho Yakitori in the Oxo Tower is nice, if you don't want the sushi/sashimi thing.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Some good ones to check out. I've never been up the Oxo Tower, that one sounds interesting.

Not been there in ages, but Bennihana in Swiss Cottage was great - not strictly Japanese (it's teppenyaki) but the chefs prepare on hotplates around which you sit - very entertaining!

Don't understand the fuss with things like Sushi and Tempura - raw fish and deep fried crap..
Shojin ryori is the only classy type of traditional Japanese food.

Not the greatest fan of tempura, but good sushi is a beautiful thing.

Rolls are ok, but can get so convoluted with inredients, that it just becomes 'food' at that point, rather than a delicacy.

Good Sashimi-grade yellowtail, albacore and ahi make with a delicate eel/tataki(ginger & garlic)/pungzu (chile & corriander) sauce is a truly awsome, delicate taste. And, super healthy.

+1 on the sushi. Used to work for the largest sushi manufacturer in the UK - supplied Tesco, JS, etc. Horrible stuff because they've chavved it down to suit boring UK palettes. Go into London and get some proper sushi and it's like chalk and chese compared to the supermarket crap. Agree very much re yellowtail (hamachi) but it's tricky to get hold of sometimes. I'm a big fan of kabayaki (roasted eel), masago (flying fish roe) and ama ebi (raw sweet prawn) too.

was never a fan of sushi growing up [pre yo! explosion] but can't get enough of it these days. there are some great sushi places in london, but i also have a soft spot for yo! and their 50% off vouchers! licklicklick

this thread has served a purpose, have got the OH to treat me to ikkyusan at the weekend as 'payment' for moving her into the new flat smile

go on the yo! website and enter your details, they'll email you a voucher for every offer they do. 50% comes up now an again, but they also do a rainbow deal - one of every colour for a tenner. mmmmmm!
