BBQ food ideas ...
Discussion
Planning a birthday BBQ and I'd like to have something a bit different from the run of the mill sausages, burgers and salad.
Thinking of some kebabs, possibly haloumi and veg for the veggies.
Salmon and king prawns in their shells perhaps.
Any foodies out there with better ideas please post away!
Also thinking of non BBQ food for a bit of a buffet too so any suggestions on that front welcome.
Thanks.

if you're thinking of prawns, try this recipe. Just marinade the prawns in the mixture for about an hour in the fridge, and pop on the BBQ drizzling any left over marinade on them.
2 lbs king prawns (peeled with tails on)
plenty of Olive oil
2 tbsp of your favourite BBQ sauce
2 tbsp of lemon juice
1 tbsp of honey
3 garlic cloves (crushed)
fresh parsley and fresh chives.

Otherwise, I'd go for the basic steak (beef or fish) with a marinade of your choosing.
Posted this before but its worth putting up again
Go to the butcher and get him to butterfly a leg (or half lef) of lamb. When you get it home, put it skin side down on a chopping board and cut the thicker bits of meat so that the leg is roughly the same thinkness all the way across. Pound up loads of fresh herbs and seasoning with olive oil and rub all over the meat. Stick in a freezer bag and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours.
Prep up loads of crispy lettuce, tomaotoes and red onions. Also buy (or make if you like) some tzatziki. Slice open a load of pita breads.
When the BBQ is good and hot, put the meat skin side down for about 5 minutes and turn over. Cook until you reach an acceptable level of rarity - I like mine quite pink in the middle but leave it on for longer if you like. When you're happy, stick the whole leg on a big chopping board and let people carve off chunks and put in the pita with the salads.
Handy if theres a lot of people all milling about eating rather than sitting at a table.

It's been mentioned a few times before on other threads but Coca Cola Chicken is pretty tasty, I've tried it a few times:
Ingredients:
- Chicken thighs
- 1 or 2 cans of Coke
- Ketchup
- Herbs (dried will do, Oregano, Thyme are good)
Method:
- Take the bones out of the chicken thighs and put them in a bowl (ETA - the thighs, not the bones!)
- Add the Coke, a squirt of ketchup and a handful of herbs
- Mix well
- Leave in fridge for several hours
Then cook the chicken on the BBQ. I like to slice it into pieces once cooked and serve in a pitta with some minted yoghurt and iceburg lettuce.

Apparently there is something you can do with a banana (no, not that) but I forget how the recipe goes.
You can wrap them in cheese slices and bacon and grill... surprisingly edible. Good for the morning after when you realise that you did over-cater on the beer front, but appear to have drunk it all anyway.BBQ'd asparagus. Drizzle/spray with a little oil, plonk on BBQ until slightly blackened. Eat.
Best thing for BBQ's I've found this year.
That and homebase are doing a 3 pack of Nando's chicken marinades, oh and the recent Bath food fair resulted in some wonderful chocolate mole, morroccan spices and chili marinades :P

It goes without saying but really good quality meat does help. Similarly with sausages, it's all too easy to be seduced by the 2 for £5 offers in the tesco freezer section but for not much more money, the quality can massively improve by buying from a decent butcher or farmers market.
For example, a butcher near us does the best wild boar sausages (and potentially, the best sausages period) i've ever tasted, they only cost about a fiver for 15 saussies too, cheaper than tesco by far.
Someone else mentioned fish... good idea. I tend to go for a whole fish of some sort, salmon works particularly well. Get a large piece of tinfoil and lay the fish in it. Slice a lemon up and put inside as well as a good splash of dry white wine & a couple of bay leaves & some dill. Pop a couple of chunks of butter inside and dotted around, seal it well and throw on the bbq. Lovely.
