Okay, long story but I'm sitting next to about 60-odd cans of Red Stripe that have a best before date of 31/3/2008 stamped on them. Should I drink them? Any horror stories out there on out-of-date beer?

They'll be fine, may taste a little different but I'd say they're safe still.

Yeah - at "worst" they'll taste funny (given the date - I'm sure much [years] older stuff might make you feel worse).

You didn't buy it off my competitor did you? It's the kind of st he'd sell.wink

If you drink 60 cans of Red Stripe at one sitting, it matters not one iota about the date stamped on the can. You'll have your very own Stephen King of a horror story, regardless.

The last time I touched Red Stripe was in Negril, about fifteen years ago....and it wasn't nice even then.

You'll be ill. It's Red Stripe.

I don't think three months will make any difference.

I normally don't drink lager so it all tastes funny! But free beer is free beer....

Out of date tinned beer usually tastes a bit metallic - depending just how out of date it is, it may or may not be tolerable.

Guinness at 9 months past selly-by is definitely a bad idea. vomit

People worry too much about use by dates etc, my cupboards are full of stuff well past its use by date and i still use it and have done for years. Christ my Dad took HP sauce with him to the USA 6 years ago and he still uses it 4 years past its use by.

dont do it

Once had the worst bout of projectile vomiting upon drinking a can of beer that had been in the fridge a while, ok 5 years to be precise and I thought it tasted a bit funny on the way down

The house we moved into had a fridge in the garage full of out-of-date lager and beer.

Did we throw it out?

Nooooo!!!
We're Scottish after all. smile

Out of date beer will taste exactly the same providing it is only a few months over the sell-by date.

It is only dated to encourage sales to the commercial chains. I have a friend who used to work for Guiness (Park Royal) employed as an Analytical Chemist and whose role was specifically to 'test beer' and yes that included drinking it!

So you sold it to an Englishman? Well done laugh..... I think he's at the top of the thread.

They'll be fine smile Easiest way to tell is by opening a can and tasting it.
Generally, up to 3 months past best before date is OK.
3-6 months, hit and miss on quality.
6 months plus, dubious.
