I've been experimenting with a ginger beer plant recipe I found on the internet (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A827426). This is day 10 of the process, and it now smells distinctly alcoholic. Tomorrow, I'll be diluting it as per the instructions, splitting the plant into two and bottling the results. I should find out if it's been a success in two-weeks time when it's ready to drink. Really I'm hoping for a nice fiery taste with the alcoholic strength of a weak-moderate beer.

Runour has it, however, that the "proper" ginger beer plant contains far more cultures than simple yeast. Are there any brewers of ginger beer on here who might enlighten me?

Didn't know it was alcoholic!

BTW, what's the difference between ginger ale and ginger beer? And what's root beer?

Sorry can't help but it sounds like something I'd enjoy a couple of pints of.

Ginger ale, IIRC, is a mixer - essentially a ginger flavoured soft drink. I think root beer is some wierd sasparilla-type concoction.

Ginger beer is hardly alcoholic at all. I used to use bakers yeast for my plant. One thing to watch out for is the bottles have a tendency to explode if you leave them too long.

We visited on a 70ft Oyster Yacht and moored up against on of the big hotels in Hamilton I think. We went ashore for breakfast 10ish and everyone else ordered Dark and Stormys, well still sitting there in shorts 12 hours later I realised where the dark came from. It wasn't until the morning till I understood the stormy bit.

Lovely island, well worth a return. In fact I have 4 cans of GB in the fridge and a whole bottle of Goslings in the cupboard, but that for Saturday with some 25 year old Mount Gay..

Yes, they creep up on you and give you a good shoeing wink I think the Rum Swizzles are way worse for that though.

With regards the title, is there a ginger beer that isn't a beverage? If so what is it?

anyone tried a new one, that I have only seen in a few places, Lashings of Ginger Beer.

It looks traditional, a bit famous five if you like.

I hear that they will be doing traditional lemonade, and special one-offs like cream soda, dandelion and burdock.

One ginger beer I don't like is Belvoir ... blows your head right off your shoulders.
