I opened a bottle of 1975 Delaforce port this evening. It's been in the house for ages and I can't really remamber where or when we acquired it.

Anyhow, when I opened the seal, I found no cork to remove, it appeared to have dropped inside the bottle.

I decanted the liquid into a jug, filtering it through a couple of layers of kitchen roll, The sediment and crud that was left on the paper was very black. I couldn't get the remains of the cork out though.

I just had a sip of the suff, and whilst it tasted okay, I'm worried that if I quaff any more, I'm likely to get a dose of the trots.

Am I worrying unnecessarily, or am I likely to die in my sleep?

No, you'll be absolutely fine - drink it all.

PS - can I have your Chimaera tomorrow when they find the body. Ta! smile

Should be alright to drink if you've filtered it. Might not taste too good if the cork has been in it too long though.

Tasting notes please!

On a similar note, I've got some port that I decanted several years ago and forgot about. It's been in a decanter with a glass stopper since then.

Will it still be ok to drink?

If it's a lead glass decanter you might not want to because the port may have leached some lead from the glass. Even if it's a plain glass decanter it will be badly oxidised by now.
