Seems they are selling cheaper chickens now but free range orders have gone up...wonder if this as a result of Hugh's Chicken Run...or are they charging more for the free range to cover the reduction in price for the chav chicken!

Dunno but my local tesco only seems to do ultra cheap chickens or those expensive £8-10 organicefreerangefedonchampagneandoysters varieties.

Moral of the story is not to buy chickens from tesco - period.

I will as I have shares so it's in my interest. I won't support them on the chicken thing though.

Theres a cruelty to chickens (horrible video) KFC video here
Free range chickens are supposed to live a better life. But that said, I remember seeing something on TV a few years ago, the rant/argument being that the free range chickens often receive treatment which is little better than the 'regular birds' these days rolleyes

Whilst I do enjoy some types of instant meals, I must admit the ones which contain chicken are usually vile and strangely flavourless. I can only imagine they 'washed' the breasts - I saw another program on telly, in which they showed the machines operating in which chicken breasts were rolled over and over, in what could be described as a giant washing machine filled with a little water, running at perhaps 10rpm. Water absorption = heavier breasts (oooh eh! hehe) and thus more profit for the supermarkets' shareholders.

I don't know how widespread the practice is, but apparently some chicken is also injected with beef and pork proteins. By injecting these proteins, they can make the chicken breast become around 50% water. Link --> http://www.theecologist.org/archive_detail.asp?con... (about a third of the way down the page). I eat pork, beef etc but the thought of other animal's proteins in my chicken made me want to go hurl

We bought an organic free-range chicken from the new deli near us - in fact, it even had a little label stating the name and address of the farm where it was bred.

Not cheap at £11.99, but it was lickcloud9 and out of that we got two evening meals, some sarnies for during the week and some fantastic chicken stock. smile

Blimey! That is unbelieveable treatment at the end. It's one thing being in the process, so to speak, it's another blokes STAMPING on chickens and throwing them at walls. But then, that's simply the mentality of the guys and not a function of the process itself.

It does make you cringe! Most of us pay top dollar for a good steak, so why scrimp when it comes to chicken. Following pods post, Ive decided that the next bird I roast will definitely be free range/organic.

Your value for money example made it seem quite reasonable... just not sure about all that left over chicken stock! hehe

Chicken stock can be used for gravy or soup (from what I understand from the boss).

I always chuck the fat/juices out the pan (whatever roast Im doing) and make a gravy with ox... er, with Bisto and hot water which loosens the sediment and flavours from the bottom of the pan lick

Cripes, has it been over a year? No more scratching I take it? smile

Got the same Tyson VS Holyfield problem with Chipper, Sneak and Flash hehe
Had it occurred to anyone, that a gerbil costs thrice that of a Tesco Chicken on special?

Im currently conducting an experiment, following which I intend to reveal to the world, how many grams of sustenance a gerbil requires daily and at what cost, based on a 1kg food bag shared between 6 adult nippers nerd

According to the aforementioned article, with medication, an adult chicken only consumes 3kg of feed in its 43 day lifetime.

Speaking of Pod's local chicken, he'll be home in 15 mins. He's getting the last of it tonight, in a pasta sauce with mushrooms, local bacon and creme fraiche.

Likewise.

Sainsburys or Waitrose all the way for me.

Apart from the odd trip to M&S.
