Antipasto just means "before the pasta" and usually consists of a few different combinations of foods, served cold.
Chopped tomatoes, with chunks of mozzarella and basil, drizzled in olive oil is a simple and delicious starter.

I have a party to attend tonight at a neighbours; eveyone is tasked with bring different things.
For the love of God, don't go! Next thing you know you'll be buying a Renault Espace and telling yourself a conservatory is a better investment than a years membership of a supercar club. . . . . . . Towie said:

And an Italian gayer at that. . . . . .Just take two 20 piece Chicken McNugget boxes (with dips) and two KFC variety meals. Probably be a blessed relief for all the blokes at the party who have been told by SWMBO not to eat all day because there will be 'nibbles' at the party. . . . .

In this case pasto = meal, not pasta ( = paste). So "before the meal". A singular plate. Antipasti = multiple plates of antipasto. How to win friends an influence people (not) ..

Okay, I admit it...
...I am a little Italian.
not italian enough to know it actually translates as before course i.e. before the 1st course ...I am a little Italian.
antipasto is generally different types of salami (milano, coppa, parma ham, bresaola...) with veg in vinegar or oil, cheeses and bread
very simple but very tasty
