They send out so many notifications of extra discounts (offer boost they call them) that it's easy to miss them. So I thought it might be worth starting this thread so people can highlight special offers others may have missed. If no one else bothers, then I'll know it's a crap idea. Anyway, currently:

40% off food only at Frankie & Bennys, all day every day.
40% off food only at Las Iguanas, ex Saturdays
40% off food only at Bella Italia, ex Saturday
40% off food only at Banana Tree, ex Saturday
40% off food only at Chiquitos, ex Saturday

At the risk of sounding like a typical PH snob, anywhere worth eating at?

Whilst I do have and use BLC, I really hate this whole voucher code pricing that companies do.

40% off is a huge amount, so clearly anyone paying full price is getting ripped off. This leads to no one going there without a voucher so the voucher price is actually the real price as it’s what everyone pays!

Excuse me, but why do 'blue light' workers get a discount anyway? Don't they just do a job like everyone else?

hehe

I've got one. Never used it once in over a year.

I use mine often, but even with 40% off I wouldn't be inclined to eat at any of those places.

I don't have a BL card but regularly receive the same discounts for most of those places - I did but a taste card just to find the same thing and cancelled it.

Those places are all owned by the same company. Probably the food comes from the same factory.

Having said that, I find Bella Italia perfectly bearable when I need feeding quickly.

I let my card lapse this time, have had one for many years but as they started opening it up to more and more people who were nothing to do with blue light services the discounts diminished to the point where someone above said similar discounts are easily available with a quick google search.

Only really use mine for samsung EPP or high street clothing shops, however historically:

Bought new windows in the house it added an extra 5% discount.
Bought a kitchen from homebase years ago, used a gift card and paid it through BLC for an 8% saving on the cash price.

They have fastfood giftcard discounts which resulted in a 5-10% saving.

Well I had spaghetti & meatballs in Frankie & Benny's in The Strand today, for lunch. £18 ish reduced to £11 ish. A large portion and piping hot, was very impressed.

The wife's got one as a teacher - We use it a lot - sometimes through the app, sometimes she searches on the web and while they aren't officially in the app, places still give a discount.

(ex teachers and ex armed forces and ex everything it seems can now get one.)

Also works in stores as well - Skechers for example have BL discount (online and in store).

It's taught me that up until now, I've been the only bugger paying full price for things and literally everyone else is getting 20%+ off !!!

Generally, if you qualify for a BLC then the majority will not be earning a great deal. When you don't earn a great deal, fine dining is literally not on the menu and you take what you can.

I will usually only eat out if it's cheap and BLC helps with this. However, as I don't usually eat much (and don't really care what I eat), most of my discounts are used on other stuff as/when needed.

But yes, you bypassed the 'risk' of sounding like a PH snob by stepping straight in as an actual PH snob. However, I accept that comment was mostly in jest so you get a pass on this occasion!

They're quite useful in the lead up to Christmas.

I don't buy from anywhere just because they have Blue Light Discount, but if I'm buying presents for family anyway then I'll check if there's a discount and will often save a fair bit.

Can't remember the last time I ever used it to buy anything for myself though tbh.

If you really want to get wound up, look at who actually qualifies for a blue light discount…
“Teaching staff” includes anyone working at a school
“School Lunchtime Auxiliary” or a “Pupil Supporr assistant” on one day a week is listed.

I think this was a nice idea, & pals in the frontline police & ambulance service genuinely used it back in the day, however there’s such a wide range of folk it’s accessible to it kind of makes a mockery of the “Blue Light” thing.
I’d wager most using it now are non frontline emergency service

Going back a bit to before schemes like this, cops would always ask for a police discount.

I remember back to when Asda offered a 10% BLC on shopping (minus alcohol, lottery etc).

You'd have to wait at the self scan for someone to come along and approve the discount. It wasn't long before you'd notice most of the people around you doing the same. I don't believe they still offer it.

I have one as a Civil Servant. Previously used a Defence Discount Card which was more suited to my role, however the BLC was more recognised so I opted for one. I don't really tend to use it for food but discounts on hotels etc are handy to shave a few quid off, although as stated above similar discounts are available via other means.
