Just no, a hot cross bun is perfect as it is no need to ruin it with other ingredients, lemon curd has its place in a tart but not inside a hot cross bun.

Dreadful and chavvy.

There's been an awful lot of stretching of the definition of hot cross bun in recent years. I've yet to find one which improves matters. Doubtless Mrs BF will keep bringing them home 'as a nice change '...

I've found it really hard to find a traditional bun. Just one with a little bit of glaze and some nice currants...

Anyone got any recommendations?

Aldi premium ones are good, perhaps a bit too rich and not as 'bready' as I'd prefer, but tasty nonetheless.

Just a bog standard Tea Cake - they don't have to be toasted.

Exactly. Teacakes must be toasted. But I never toast hot x buns. Dunno why.

I left the UK in the late '90s

'90s = traditional hot cross bun

'25 = Mercurially pissed-off bourgeois bun

God alive Mrs BigM came home from Tesco with some Chedder and Red Leicester cheese hot cross buns lasy week.
That must be against trade description surely? redcard there was no fruit in there at all, no cinnamon either basically it was just a cheese scone.
Bloody nice toasted and lashed with butter. But not absolutely not a hot cross bun.

I'm wary of Hot Cross Buns now having set the smoke alarm off twice last year! I like(d) them well toasted and the currents caught and started smoking before I could get to the toaster! Had the Fire Brigade out the first time! Rather embarrassing answering the door to a Fire Officer!

Should maybe explain I live in a block of 4 flats for the older gits like me, opposite an old folks retirement complex, so speedy responses from the Emergency Services is normal and, usually, appreciated! paperbag

Under the grill usually works out better than toasted, then of course let them cool for a couple of mins so lots of the butter stays solid

Yum!

As with mince pies, hot cross buns should never be messed with, away with your lemon curd and salted caramel

For this of us looking to optimise sugar / salt / fat intake so we can continue to be powerfully built directors,

Anyone up for a cinnamon and raisin toasted bagel ?

They are not the full traditional bun, granted, but they are taste adjacent and respond well to toasting and real butter
