It seems that the increase in alcohol duty comes in at the weekend, mainly hitting wine, time to get shopping.

Stick to 11.5% and you'll actually save money!

Blimey, didn't know this, or maybe I did but didn't think about it.

I might need to do my annual 'big wine shop' ASAP then!

I would like to, as I find wines over 12% or so overly alcoholic tasting. But I struggle to find any sub-12%, particularly reds, in mainstream supermarkets. Have you any recommendations, please?

Most Pinot Noir tends to be lighter in alcohol from my experience.

12% is a tough target, but I agree. There are so many reds that are 14.5% these days, it's too much. You can taste the alcohol.

I am hoping the trend will reverse in due course and we will return to the days when 13.5% was punchy.

Have loads of decent wine left over from Christmas so won't be stocking up for a while yet, duty increase or no!

Most of the stuff I buy in Tesco seems to bounce around plus or minus 2 quid each week, so I doubt this will be noticeable.

It's been quite a big deal for the wine trade as there are now many more duty bands than there used to be. I'm told it has taken quite a lot of systems work for people. Definitely restocking before though as it does all add up.

Really? I tend to find them (Red Burgundy) 13/13.5%

Thank heavens that I like stronger wines. 15.5% works for me.

That seems a very strange anomaly. Perhaps SKS likes strong stuff. Rachel sounds like she drank too much of it.

Well done, you've saved about £16.

Think of the fun you'll have with that.

It is similar to multiple rates of VED, more emmissions, pay more tax!

Be far better and much cheaper to impliment a single rate.

But we have just started a two month break on the Algarve and hooch is far more sensibly priced, think I paid less than 6 euros for a five litre box!
