I'm sure I'm not alone in picking the same thing every time but I'm out tonight for a family meal and fancy a change.

My normal go to is a lamb (or vegetable) Madras.

I like a bit of spice but I've tried being silly before and it's caught me out, so no suggestions for Vindaloo or Phall... never again!

What would the best suggestions be?

I love a Goan fish curry if they have fish dishes on the menu or as said above a Pathia is nice.

Otherwise I usually go for Dansak as I like lentils

Chicken or lamb passanda. Coconuts and almonds, generally not spicy but usually they can make it spicy if you ask

Nearly always a Chicken Tikka or Lamb Jalfrezi....Depending on how it's prepared (chili's stripped open or left whole), you can vary the heat by working around the chilis...or indeed consuming them. My local also offers a Rezalla, which is very similar.

I'd suggest trying a Lamb Jalfrezi - it should be a step down from a Madras heat wise.

Some good ideas so far.

Pathia I’m not sure about as I’m not a fan of sweet and sour in other cuisines

Rogan Josh was on my list of things I’ve had before but not at a restaurant, the same with the Jalfrezi

Fish is a no but Dhansak is a great shout. Might go for that.

Not sure about a Passanda, sounds like it might be a bit too mild from the coconut.

Looking at a Bhuna I’d probably like that too so that’s an option.

Dhansak is my favourite, followed by Pathia. I love a Madras if I make it myself, but have found too much variation in different restaurants with some chefs making it far too hot.

Could be worth asking in the restaurant for advice?

I might do that. I’m quite shy though so I might not laugh

I bet they wouldn't mind, just tell them what you like.

I can’t remember the last time I ordered from the standard choices , I always choose from the chef special or regional specialties section on the menu .
I don’t think I’ve had a bad one .

I love dahl - my Nepali FiL used to make a superb version with all sorts of spices, it's the staple dish in Nepal.

Yep, my go to has always been a chicken tikka bhuna as a comparison between places but recently I’ve been going with specials and yet to be disappointed!
