What are you making with all this seasonal bounty? Apart from Christmas Dinner for those who are having one.

I think Brussel sprout kimchi has to be worth a try.

I'll also be prepping and freezing parsnips for soup.

Perhaps a pickle...

this might as well be old news now because apparently LIDL,ALDI and ASDA are reducing it to 8p.

I’m assuming the supermarkets do this as a loss leader and the actual farmers get paid more? Can’t see how 8p per kilo can be remotely profitable for the grower?

PH will no doubt be relieved to know that Waitrose are also offering discounted veggies: 'Essential' spuds, carrots, sprouts and parsnips are all 30p a bag.

Good to see shallots, broccoli and sprouts on offer. Heavily discounted before it gets binned, I suppose. And stores are literally only closed for two days.

Makes you wonder how much the supermarkets are paying the farmers for that stuff.

There was an article on farming today (R4) a couple of days ago. Generally speaking it is the same contract price as the rest of the year (probably too low anyway, but that’s a different issue). Supermarkets using it to tempt shoppers in for the rest of their ‘big shop’.

My gripe with this is the need to have the various store cards to get the cheap price

I've had a tesco clubcard thing for as long as I can remember but that was to collect points when fueling up the company care which I turned into meal vouchers, so I was at least getting something back

Now you seem to have to have the asda/morrisons/Lidl etc card just to get the cheaper prices show on the shelf

Tangent warning.....recently in Lidlington and tried to buy a 2 4 1 emily in paris thing for the daughter. Got to till and was told you had to have the app or whatever to get the deal....promptly told the guy to leave it then, sale lost!

It just feels abit wrong having to have the shops app to get the prices they advertise. I wonder how many sales go through at higher prices because you don't have the app( morrisons cheap veg is 80 odd p without the app!)

I just can't be bothered faffing around with all the apps just to get what I want at the price they say

Anyway, rant over....merry Christmas

Just ask the person behind you to put it on their loyalty card. They get the points, you get a discount.

What if that person is another middle aged bloke on his own with the same anal attitude to store cards/apps?

I saw someone do this the other day in Tesco, a customer on one checkout reached over to another till and scanned her phone, with the other customer thanking her over and over. Took me a while to realise what had just happened.

we did this yesterday. All supermarkets were out of any slabs of beef for roasting.. except for sainsburys.
All the supermarkets were doing their beef at half price. But sainsburys would only have the half price offer on nectar. they had ran out of nectar cards to give/register. someone overheard this and let us use theirs in order to get the discount.

not true for some of them, asda no card was needed and hardly a faff to have 3/4 cards/apps, but anyway as you were.
