My wife bought a Nutribullet blender because it had the best reviews at that price point (was on discount) and has been rinsing and washing the screw-in blade cap as per the instructions but there’s a funky smell building up which she can’t seem to get rid of - has soaked it in soapy water and even spun it with vinegar but no improvement. The blade unit can’t go in the dishwasher according to the instructions.

Any tips to get rid of it? It doesn’t seem uncommon, reading up on it, don’t know if there’s something in the plastic materials that means it holds a smell when you really don’t want it to.

Same with he jug and lid of my Ninja soup maker. With them both I sometimes squirt lemon juice in there and let it soak, add some water and give it a blitz, then some washing up liquid. The Ninja lid can at least go in the dishwasher. As for my Nutrabullit I do the same.

I have found that letting it dry with the blades pointing down seems to help any smell/taste building up in the spinning part.

I have a Nutri Ninja & after a few years it suddenly smelt really bad; it turned out that the blade bearing had worn out & I had to replace the blade unit.

Soak in white vinegar? (Dunno if it would ruin it or taint it with a constant smell - you'll need to google that!)

Apparently what you don’t do is put some bicarbonate and vinegar in it so the gaseous release builds up the pressure and you can’t vget the fking lid off again!

Will try some of the above too.

Gravy granules and boiling water are the middle ground here. The pressure builds up but unfortunately the lid does come off and the contents come out, over an impressive distance at somewhere around the speed of light and hot enough to melt tungsten.

So I've discovered a fool-proof way of getting a smell-free Nutribullet:

Pour some vinegar into the spare jug container, put some bicarbonate of soda into the blade unit, then join them together to mix up the solution, tightening the blades onto the jug. After an hour or so, take the skin of your palms by trying to twist the blade unit back off again, leaving it in the fridge and then a radiator to see if temperature changes will loosen them a bit, then take the unit into the garden to break the spare jug container with a hammer thus retrieving the blade unit, and on the fifth blow close your eyes while the two units separate at speed as the blade unit's thread cracks open. Put the two pieces in the bin and order a new blade unit from Amazon after wiping the vinegar and bicarb solution off your face.

Some of the above steps may be optional.

This is where the Thermomix comes into its own.

All the bits come apart: blades, jugs, it all goes into the dishwasher.

For five or more years we have always rinsed ours under the tap immediately after blending and never had any smells.

But, we may not be blending the same things.
