As a practical joke, a friend of mine wants to send an acquaintance of mine a tonne of potatoes. Does anyone know the cheapest way to go about this?

I'm ascertaining now whether the potatoes have to be edible or not, but I think no.

If this goes ahead with PH advice then photographic proof will be provided.

Ask your local chip shop as to where they get theirs from? Certainly around here there’s a couple of companies that seem to deliver massive (at a guess 25 or 50 kg) bags to the local chippys.

Cheapest way would be to buy a crate of rejected spuds from a spud farm, just rock up with a trailer and they'll load it on the back with a forklift or telehandler.

They might want the crate back, or will charge for the crate. You'll struggle with getting a tonne though, they're 2 tonne crates. Hold an awful lot of spuds.

After spuds are dug up, they get graded, and rejected ones or ones that are a bit manky get slung in to another crate and are devilishly cheap to buy. They do smell a bit.

Seems reasonable as a prank, but the unintended consequences will be a very nasty rotting spud smell permeating the neighbourhood. Otherwise it's 40 bags for a tenner a bag from a wholesaler.

Back in the days when I was working I used to buy spuds by the bag at a veg. wholesaler in Manchester. Then I started gertting spuds as a reload out of places like Perth, the loader would often slip a bag into the cab for me. Very handy with a growing family!

2 tonne crate would be absolutely fine apparently, if cheap.

Anyone any recommendations in vague vincity of london? Also my friend being a metropolitan type doesn't have a car but I'm sure a man in a van could do, or alternatively someone else being roped in.

Contact Spitalfields.
You can probably buy and get a pallet of potatoes delivered from one of the suppliers.

Fodder beet might be cheaper and less wasteful.

It's very important it's potatoes for a couple of reasons I can't say online. But confirmed they don't have to be edible.

I accept it will be wasteful. That's just part of the disgusting inequalities in the society in which we live I'm afraid.

(And don't worry about the recipient paying to sort the potatoes either. Money is something I think about, my friend bankrolling* this thinks less about, and the recipient thinks about not a jot other than how to move enormous amounts it from one place to another for a percentage cut, continuously - if you catch my drift wink - ps if you live within such a world and know of someone that this would obviously be directed towards FFS DO NOT TELL HIM. You can probably work out at least who one of me or my soas/oxonian friend - who is bald, has a semitic nose, libertarian ideals, magic circle membership and shockingly undeserved success with women. Message one of us for fun. )

*I've said I'll chuck in a ton but only if it's a literal tonne or more of potatos. The current plan which is very flexible is:

Monday a potato sack
Tuesday 2kg
Wednesday 20kg
Thursday 1 - 2tonnes
Friday a solitary potato

NB if this gets working then I will have to remove the details from this thread to prevent goolging. But I'm pretty damn sure the recipient has no clue atm.

Just in case you do delete the details.

Buy the guy a single bag of spuds as a joke. Give the ton of potatoes to a food bank instead.

As an alternative, have a look at www.textapotato.com .

A spud in some of their, erm, less than discreet packaging might get the job (or part of it) done.

Just go the whole hog.
Hire a midget in a potato costume and pay him to sing the mashed potato song for 8 hours through a PA system outside your friends office.

Difficulty of getting potatoes is they are bulky, industry standard is 1T crates (themselves about £120 empty) or 1T tote bags £10

The crates could be delivered with a tail lift/pallet truck
The bulk bags are a bit trickier (& dangerous as they can kill folk toppling over.

If it was me I would opt for 40 x 25kg sacks, these could be obtained from a fruit/veg market & loaded into a van (either on a pellet or individually)

For absolute minimum effort & getting delivered - the chip shop supplier route might be the way forward (they are generally used to hand balling 25kg sacks in doors to shops & would likely oblige - only issue might be that might mean you need to get fry quality potatoes so might be a bit more expensive.

Potatoes have a shelf life so these folks might have done cheap stuff to get rid of & the network to deliver

If a van is an option, & you can find a potato farm locally
A bulk tote bag is basically just something you can slice open & pour out of the back door (you can also get 1t cardboard boxes)
