Best place to source large raw prawns
Discussion
I'm after some large raw king prawns - head off is fine - preferred even, but I definitely want shell on. By large, I mean 4 - 6 per KG.
I've used a few places in the past including Borough Mkt, Selfridges, Wing Yip and a mail order place that's got the county to the west of Devon in it's name.
The mail order prawns were described as "Enormous", but they really weren't. I am not buying from there again.
There used to be a weekly fishmonger at our local farm shop, but that doesn't happen any more.
I don't mind buying frozen, but the stock at Wing Yip doesn't seem to be consistent.
They're for Xmas Eve, so I'd rather avoid traipsing in to London and I don't fancy getting up at 4am for a trip to Billingsgate.
Thanks

I seem to remember Costco can have some very large frozen prawns in a box, although I'm unsure whether they are big enough for your needs.

You want grade 4/6, meaning 4 to 6 prawns per kilo. Most retail is 16/20.
Ignore any terms like 'large' or 'huge', it's the number per Kg which counts.
I'd give Upstream Seafoods (based in Croydon) a call and see if they can source them for you. They mainly supply to the catering trade but have a small retail offering.

Thanks - I went for The Fish Society in the end. Ordered their last 2 boxes of 3 prawns, they've arrived and they are indeed enormous. They're now safely tucked up in the freezer waiting for Xmas eve.I seem to remember Costco can have some very large frozen prawns in a box, although I'm unsure whether they are big enough for your needs.
