A gang forced 16 victims to work at either the fast-food restaurant or the factory - which supplied Asda, Co-op, M&S, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

I don't think that this kind of Society is endemic to Britain, I bet it happens also in Germany or France or the US etc...

Is the average Brit unaware of the roughly 20 to 30 % Underworld wheeling and dealings in societies?

There are regions in Frankfurt which are no go zones for the police.
In France entire (Suburban) cities are like that.
