A chicken wing is made up of three pieces: the drumette, the flat (or wingette) and the tip:
A plate - or portion - of 'flats' should not be called wings as they are only one-third of a wing. To qualify as a wing, it should be at least the drumette and the flat to count as one. Minimum quantity for a starter should be three (whole) wings and a 'main' portion should be at least five.

Hey, great post. And the fact you spent the time making up the image to explain it.A plate - or portion - of 'flats' should not be called wings as they are only one-third of a wing. Google Image find, actually. Tried to credit the source but that too hoisted its images from all over the internet. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MOtYY5oOZSE/UCExZg8Mk1I...
Wanted to start off with basic facts and not turn it into a full on rant about (mainly) Turkish ocakbasis serving six 'wingettes' and charging full whack for what they pitch as wings when they're clearly one-thirds. Some chain pubs sell them by the bucket which is excusable IMHO.
I like wings. I think they still are massively underrated.
