Love an apple. But who sells the best?
I like the Tesco Braeburn, but the consistency is terrible. They're either crisp, tangy and juicy. Or dry and powdery, fit only for the bin.
What supermarkets sell consistently great apples? And what type? Tried going to the market but whilst they were bigger, the quality wasn't great.
I only buy Braeburns, every week, from Lidl, keep them in the Fridge, and cannot complain about them at all. I like the Tesco Braeburn, but the consistency is terrible. They're either crisp, tangy and juicy. Or dry and powdery, fit only for the bin.

Others say Lidl fruit and veg is not so good, but the 2 stores in East London I use always have good stuff that lasts, I think it varies area to area or how busy the store is.
I changed to Lidl from Tesco, because the fruit and veg was utter ste, would not keep a few days.

Pink lady is very consistent but this time of year I tend to forage / scrump.
I am fruit mad, and do this too, the lack of council maintainence this year has meant Blackberries everywhere, and a second crop appearing this time round, eat loads on dog walks. In the park there are two trees with red and yellow fruits, same but colour, some type of small plum and delicious.
Bit short of apple trees in this part of the world.
Athens, around residential areas, I find different types of orange, lemons, and big juicy pomegranets on street trees, Should have fruit tress on the streets here.
My current favourite -
Gala
So sweet - Means no need for a sugar laden dessert.
One Gall sliced.
One banana sliced.
Two spoons of Greek Yoghurt.
Mix and eat - it takes some time to finish - it's filling - and stops me eating sweets and chocolate.
Recommended - Pretty much the same from all supermarkets.

In my view bigger is worse. The amount of flavour remains the same but diluted into a larger indigestible sphere. It's like comparing a good UK bred, grass fed steak with a pallid puffed up American almost flavourless gut busting piece a cow.I like the Tesco Braeburn, but the consistency is terrible. The very best apples I have ever tasted were picked from my own Cox's Orange Pippin tree in my garden at the house I lived from 1997 until 2012. Lift and if it comes off the tree just by that action then polish on your trouser leg, bite a lump from it (the apple, not the trouser leg of course) and enjoy a trip to heaven. The Philistines that bought the place chopped the bloody trees down and a half-century old exquisite palest ivory magnolia tree in the back garden.

In season, M&S sell tree ripened (rather than industrially ripened) apples. They taste amazing, to the extent they override any species preference.
Some quite interesting YouTube videos on supermarket apples. They can be months old before you buy them, and are almost always chemically ripened in storage before they are released to the supermarkets.
If buying apples out of season, I like Jazz or Fuji apples.

apples are often months old irrespective of supermarkets. old varieties exist for their storage capabilities to last the winter. the ripening issue caused by supermarket requirements of blemish resistance i given the transporting of them is a different matter, meaning a lot never properly ripen so early are thye picked for hardness so dont develop the same sugars and complexity as those left on the tree. Some quite interesting YouTube videos on supermarket apples. variety preferences however are perfectly valid irrespective of tree ripening, i dont like russet types other than for juice (which is superb in most russets) as i dont like the texture although they are often sweeter than non russets.
growing up with a small orchard the egremonts and ashmeads kernels were the red headed stepchildren mostly, wheras the the katys and spartans were scoffed.
