Specifically one that doesn't stick near end of use by meat in to the shop thinking it's acceptable. Me and my wife won't use Waitrose as they have form.

It's usually got 2 days on before expiry.

You can reject items from Tesco for this.

In which case don’t use Morrisons, they’re just as bad.

We just do online for non-perishable stuff now, all fruit, veg, meat and bread we choose ourselves.

I've found they are all as bad.

I use Asda at the moment, I won't buy it if it shows its expected shelf life to be less than when I want to use it. If it does arrive with less, then I go on the app and put that as a reason. I also do the same if something arrives (that didn't have a warning as to a short expiry on the website) with something that is unusually short. I always have the refund in my account 48 hours later and keep the product too.

So what do you do with it then? You've said you're not prepared to use it.

Give it to a local foodbank? Or feed it to the dog?

What do you do?

Indeed. And the picker isn't going to be delving to the back of the shelf or bottom of the chiller to find the pack with a couple more days on it, like you might if you were shopping for yourself.

(I find that supermarket meat is short dated at the best of times, I suspect to encourage you to return more frequently)

I don't know if it's still true, or if it ever was, but I heard that Asda online pickers collect from the warehouse at the back of store, rather than the shelf. Which may help with getting food with a good date.

Seems to be corroborated by the fact you don't see them, in comparison to Tesco which has lots of pickers in the aisles

We have been using Asda for 8 years now and rarely have issues with short or expired dates.

Yes you can't move for the Tesco pickers locally! No incentive to pick from anywhere else in the shelf is there.

Having used Ocado for over ten years, expiry dates of delivered products is consistently excellent. Delivery reliability is also 99.9% and drivers always very nice.

Price matched with Tesco (but I suspect still costs more overall than other options).

Mrs S agrees with all that.

Ocado is the best, although not quite as good as they were a couple of years back. We have a regular delivery slot on a Tuesday and the meet always has a best before date of the coming Saturday, so about 5 days.

We find Morrisons really good. Apparently comes from a shop just set up for deliveries which public aren’t allowed in.

Apparently M&S stuff from Ocado has longer dates than stuff on the shelf at M&S because it comes directly from a distribution centre. In the shop they don't put new stuff out until the current dated product is gone.

Morrison's are partnered with Ocado for logistics support.

I suspect that the better home deliveries come from a central warehouse rather than being picked by a local shop.

Ocado has a technology arm that does that stuff - it's behind-the-scenes, not related to products, home delivery vans etc.

Another for Ocado, barely any substitutions and reasonably logical when there are (though watch the price of the supplied item).

Ocado used to be the only delivery service supplying from a dark warehouse rather then a superstore, so no chance of Joe Public taking the last item with your name on it before your shopper got there. Whether other supermarkets also now have home delivery only warehouses now and do better on substitutions / missing items I don’t know. Sainsburys were just as bad when I tried switching back a couple of years ago.
