No/Low Alcohol - Nootropics
Discussion
Anyone tried any of these beers? In my quest to reduce my alcohol consumption (hangovers are getting worse as I age) I'm on the lookout for replacements. Ideally I'd love to find something that produced a buzz similar to that of alcohol, but without the nasty sides. I've tried On Beer, but no buzz was forthcoming, regardless of the marketing hype.
I've heard good things about Guinness (0%) so will give that a go next (but I appreciate there are no nootropics involved in that).
Am I asking for the holy grail or do you think we're close to a real alcohol replacement?
Buzz from alcohol? Never noticed. I regularly drink single malts, too.
As for 0.0 Guinness, it's amazing. A really nice taste. I prefer it to real Guinness but then I've never liked real Guinness. Every now and then (6+ months) I buy half a pint of the real stuff as a reminder and am ambivalent about it. I love porters, though.

I ‘use’ Impossibrew and find it relaxing, it definitely has an effect on me. In fact without thinking I drove after enjoying a can and felt I shouldn’t be behind the wheel.
I also like Sentia, which has similar but slightly different effects on me. The flavours may not be to everyone’s taste as they’re quite different from anything else, but I like it especially the ‘Black’ which is a bit peppery and very pleasant with tonic.
These have really helped me cut my alcohol consumption down to virtually zero, very special occasions only now.
Feeling bright as a button in the morning is great!

You're looking for something that gives you 'the buzz', ie drunkenness, but sans alcohol? Good luck with that!
To be fare, that was almost the design brief for MDMA - described as an attempt at a zero calorie gin and topic by the chemist who discovered it in an interview. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you are questioning your alcohol consumption its probably best to concentrate on that and quit drinking.
There are plenty of really great non alcoholic beers now, and hunting a buzz is better found in lifestyle changes than other substances to replace alcohol.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying the relaxing feeling you get from a couple of glasses of wine or a couple of pints. There are plenty of really great non alcoholic beers now, and hunting a buzz is better found in lifestyle changes than other substances to replace alcohol.
It doesn't mean you are an alcoholic.

It’s tedious how alcoholics can’t understand how other people don’t need to do the same as they do in terms of drinking. It doesn't mean you are an alcoholic.
I’m cutting back on how much I drink a week as much for the calories as for the alcohol itself, but have no interest in stopping entirely.
I've tried Impossibrew over the last week, and its definitely a nice non-alcoholic beer, but not sure I was overly convinced by the 'social-blend' etc that is meant to give you a kind of buzz. I probably need to have an evening with a few normal beers and try it again for comparison!
Brooklyn Special Effects, Athletic Brewing Run Wild, and the occasional Guiness are my go to. Lucky Saint on tap if available in a pub.

I think a lot of this depends on the company and place you're drinking.
I did dry January but had a little evening with some mates then. Spent the evening knocking back Noughty Bear (Shepard Neme I think). Really rather nice and had a cracking night. But would I get a few bottles in to have at home on my own? Nope.

I expect I’ll find the same, their claims seem improbable, but I’m happy to give it a try.Brooklyn Special Effects, Athletic Brewing Run Wild, and the occasional Guiness are my go to. Lucky Saint on tap if available in a pub.
I can speak to this! They won't give you a "buzz" that alcohol does, because they don't contain ethanol, which is the stuff that reacts with your brain to give you that woozy/tipsy and then drunk feel if you keep drinking it.
What they will do however is give you a pretty good plug to have a drink in your hand that gets you most of the way there, IF you don't want to drink beer. If you're expecting to get a booze like buzz from them, you literally can't. However, if you want a drink that looks like beer, feels like a beer in a glass/bottle and for the most part tastes like a beer (minus the ethanol bit) they are great.
As someone who drank way, way too often, they've been fantastic in helping kick booze. I can still go to bars with my mates and hang out without drinking cola/lemonade, any other soft drink, as well as have a cold beer like drink when it's nice outside, having a BBQ, working on the car, watching TV or whatever excuses I used to make to have a beer.
Different strokes for different folks though.

Boozy your username checks out .
I've tried a few when I've been the designated driver. I think the Germans do the best at getting them to taste ok. Drinks like alcohol free Erdinger.
My poison of choice is Guinness and Guiness Zero isn't bad but I don't expect a buzz off it. I'd be better off with a strong coffee if I want an alcohol free buzz.

Another vote for Guinness zero, it's frankly amazing compared to other low/no alcohol drinks. I've virtually given up alcohol now but get a Guinness zero when I go to the pub so I don't get accused of being vegan or something equally socially unacceptable....
I was out for lunch with the wife at a place that had just got a guinness 0.0 tap installed, I was driving so had a 0.0, wife had a real one so was able to taste them back to back, if it hadn't been for the different glass i couldn't have told the difference between them.Pitre said:

Same here - I simply cannot tell the difference. There are quite a few decent non-alcoholic beers out there now - that Bavaria stuff is good. Remember the first of these back 30-odd years ago, the likes of Barbican and Clausthaler? Revolutionary at the time but they really tasted terrible compared to the stuff we have available now.
