Restaurants that you enjoyed but are sadly no more
Discussion
Just a random post really.
Chains or standalone.
Where did you frequent that's no longer trading and have you found an alternative.
I used to enjoy going to Flatiron in North Kensington mainly because I could drive there and it was relatively easy to park.
I think it closed due to problems with the lease.
Now I go to there Soho or Covent Garden branches. Really enjoy them but driving is out.
How about others( UK or abroad)

My Wife and I used to love Bahn Thai on Frith Street in Soho, opposite Ronnie Scotts.
At the time, I wasn't aware of any other Thai restaurants in London. The food was excellent, and it was always lively and fun. Then it closed down. No idea why, but I was extremely disappointed at the time - and still am.

Is La Tasca still around? Used to love the one that was in Covent Garden
Also used to love to go to that high-end steak restaurant chain that had the cow hides on the walls - There was one tucked away just off Regents St and there was one by Tower bridge. I thought that was the height of sophisitication : )

Anthony's in Leeds, he was too early for the scene here and expanded too much, too quickly. All he did was top notch but it wasn't the right time.
Probably the closest I'll get to what El Bulli did at the time, I had some of my most memorable meals there.

Conversely when I was younger a partially converted ambulance used to park up on the cobbled High St and sell kebabs with the best mint sauce ever (even when sober). 30 years on and I still wish I could have another.

All my favourite indy restraunts are still going, but the yang sing takeaway in deans was amazing, never tasted any chinese food better anywhere ever, loads of flavour, loads of spice, never a disapointing dish. John the owner moved back to hong kong and its been through 3 owners since and the food is terrible with each.
I did enjoy a frankie and bennies at certain locations, at most other locations the food was noticably worse. How do you fk up food at a franchised chain like that?
A couple of indian places have changed hands and the food went downhill, khushis in mid calder noticably. One in edinburgh, the name escapes me now.the owner went down for money laundering and when it reopened the food was bland with stingy portions.

Revealing myself not to be the standard issue PH powerfully built company director who only dines at Michelin starred restaurants here... but I always enjoyed a trip to the Pizza Hut on the main street in my town. Can't find a Pizza Hut restaurant anywhere these days.
Also, the Pizza Express behind the Corn Exhange in Leeds - sadly gone. It had a much nicer ambience than one that's still there on Albion Place.
Furthermore, there was a place called Auberge on St Christopher's Place in London, which I stumbled across via a tiny opening on Oxford Street, though I believe there are other, more obvious ways to get there. Loved their steak and it was the only place I've ever eaten olives and enjoyed them. It's a Côte now but I've not eaten there to make a comparison.
Finally, Patachou in the Place du Tertre in Montmartre, Paris. Stunning views over the city. Featured in the film Amélie. Long gone and now a card shop!
ETA:
There was also a little cafe called Dare in Headingley near Leeds. Their Pizza (you can see a theme emerging here) was amazing! Loved the place. Sadly a victim of the small enterprise eradication campaign of 2020.

Not gone, but not as good.
We have an Indian in our local parade of shops. The food was superb and the chef won loads of awards. You needed to book weeks ahead for a weekend table. Service was also great. Really odd for a tiny restaurant a small North Kent housing estate.
They tried opening a second location but it wasn't as good without the star chef.
In the past 5 years they have been raided multiple times for employing illegal immigrants and eventually lost their alcohol licence, Reviews have dropped from always being excellent to mostly great, but peppered with the odd poor review.
We went back a few weeks ago and the food is still good, but it lacks something. You have to bring your own alcohol which takes away from the experience. We could book with no notice and it was half empty. The whole vibe was just wrong.
Sad because it was an absolute local gem. In the past I've taken friends and family there and blown their socks off.

Another I really enjoyed was the Crazy Bear Fitzrovia (Tottenham court road)
First they did some fantastic offers of a 12 course menu for £25. Asian food, noodles and the like but delicious. I think it was a Wowcher offer.
Second. The customers were stunning, really dolled up and ready for a great night out. Some very attractive women.
Alas the restaurant closed, I've been to Beaconsfield but that's gone downhill and doesn't attract the same clientele.

Barbino's in Mayfair, a small Italian restaurant that was close to my dad's office on Hill Street (mid '80's) & where he did a lot of entertaining. Owner & staff always made a fuss of us as kids, particularly my younger sister.
Texas Embassy off Trafalger Square - growing up my parents took me there for several birthdays, loved that place as there wasn't anything similar at the time.
Present day & we're about to lose a decent chicken restaurant in Chelmsford (Shwings) which is a shame.

Probably my favourite little restaurant just round the corner to me here in Leytonstone:

A delightful little family-run place that's just lovely and authentic with gorgeous food but unfortunately closing down in a couple of weeks.
Gutted!
